Description

Field Technician Astor Environmental LLC (Astor) is seeking a Field Technician to provide support to the NOAA Fisheries Point Adams Research Station in Hammond, Oregon and the Jones Beach Sampling Station in Westport, Oregon. Astor supplies personnel support services on contract to government and industry clients for marine fisheries and protected species. This is a seasonal position participating in a Federal Columbia River Power System (FCRPS) survival study. Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT) tags are used to estimate dam to dam (reach) and system-wide survival for juvenile salmonids in the Columbia River Basin. Tagged fish are released throughout the basin and tracked during their outmigration. To calculate survival to Bonneville Dam, the last dam encountered, a subset of fish must be detected downstream. To do this, we use multiple detection systems that include a pair-trawl net with the cod-end removed and replaced with a pass-through PIT antenna, a series of towed flexible antennas, and antennas deployed along flow control structures throughout the estuary. The Field Technician will play a critical role in the construction, deployment, maintenance, and operation of these specialized systems. This position requires a unique blend of technical proficiency, scientific understanding, and outdoor field experience, often involving the use of small vessels in a river environment. Duration of Position: This is a temporary position expected to run annually from January through August (possibly longer based on project needs). Salary and Benefits This is a full-time position with a generous benefit package. Salary: $27.00/hr. Overtime is paid at $40.50/hr, which is 1.5x the base rate. Duties Equipment Construction, Maintenance, and Repair: Apply knowledge of mechanical or electrical principles to troubleshoot, maintain, and repair field instrumentation (e.g., PIT antennas, submersible electronics enclosures, solar arrays). Field Operations: Assist with deployment/maintenance/retrieval of equipment, frequently requiring experience with boating (small research vessels). Work at field site often involves construction, fabrication, and electrical wiring in a shop environment. Data Collection and Adherence: Demonstrate the ability to follow complex and detailed directions (Standard Operating Procedures - SOPs) to ensure quality antenna construction, waterproofing, and equipment testing in a structured timeline. Tool Usage: Safely and proficiently using a variety of tools (e.g., drills, saws, soldering irons, heat guns, compressed gas, knives, wrenches, specialty electrical tools) for equipment construction, modification, and repair. Problem-Solving: Utilize a strong sense of resourcefulness and independence to adapt to unexpected challenges in the field and devise effective, temporary solutions to keep projects moving forward. Ability to think outside the box and brainstorm solutions in dynamic situations. PIT Tagging Systems: Experience with the installation, operation, and maintenance of tracking technologies like RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) or PIT tags is highly desirable. Flexibility and Preparedness: Demonstrate consistency to arrive on time, prepared for tasks, and work potentially long/unusual hours (early mornings, late afternoons) in extreme weather with short notice. Seasonal shift times frequently adhere to local tides making promptness especially important. Owning a reliable personal vehicle is highly desired. Required Knowledge and Experience Education: Bachelor's degree in Biology, Environmental Science, Ecology, or a related field. * Or 3+ years of relevant work experience. Technical Skills: Demonstrated knowledge of basic mechanical or electrical systems for construction, maintenance, and troubleshooting. Experience: Proven experience with boating or operating small watercraft (e.g., outboard motors, trailer handling). Documented experience safely operating various hand and power tools. Prior field or laboratory experience is a plus. Preferred Knowledge and Experience Desired Skill: Experience working with or maintaining field equipment utilizing RFID or PIT tags (e.g., fish/wildlife tracking systems, detection arrays).
