G. I. M. for Everyone https://youtu.be/dI8CldpAgTE Lionel Newman "Exciting Hong Kong" music from the TV series, "Hong Kong" see: https://youtu.be/ZNDaAAD7QAA EXCITING HONG KONG Composed and Conducted by LIONEL NEWMAN ... For the past fifty years, Hollywood has become the golden mecca of a vast horde of master craftsmen of the arts, all converging on the entertainment capital of the world to contribute their collective talents. It would seem only natural, therefore, that the race for superiority within the business makes for excellence of product unequalled in any other industry. In the field of music, the Hollywood tradesters appear to have corralled a great majority of genii, all specializing in some form of the art: composing, arranging, scoring, instrumental performance, singing, etc. Foremost in the exacting field are the various studio musical directors, the titans of the musical world who apply administrative knowledge to their own musical activity. Rated in the forefront of this echelon is LIONEL NEWMAN, the enterprising and erudite Musical Director for 20th Century-Fox Studios. Since the advent of the Hollywood studios into television production, all masters of any particular phase of the business have entered into the latest medium with a zest, and Mr. Newman is no exception. Nominated for the Award of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences no less than seven times, Mr. Newman has drawn justifiable kudos and esteem from among his colleagues, critics and the public-at-large for his remarkable achievements. It was to be expected, therefore, that television would certainly request his services in a triple-threat capacity: Composer-Arranger-Conductor. While Mr. Newman has attained a respected stature with his work in TV, two particular series have enhanced his reputation immeasurably. Serving as musical director for the well-established ABC-TV network series, Adventures in Paradise, his composition of the theme music and the general musical atmosphere created for the programs featuring Gardner McKay have evoked tremendous new plaudits for Mr. Newman. When the new series, Hong Kong, was being devised, Mr. Roy Huggins, Vice President in Charge of Production, agreed with Bill Self, the Executive Producer, and Herbert Hirschman, Producer, that Mr. Newman's exceptional virtuosity would be a mandatory complement for the musical background of the programs starring Rod Taylor and co-starring Lloyd Bochner. To date, the combination of all these talents has resulted in another highly-successful series on the ABC-TV network, and Mr. Newman's personal acclaim has found him scheduled to assume similar duties and responsibilities for an additional six contemplated series! In this album, ABC-Paramount is privileged to present selections which have been featured in Hong Kong, directed by Lionel Newman, with such top-rated arrangers as Billy May, Frank Comstock, Herb Spencer, Earle Hagen, Marty Paich, Warren Baker and Mr. Newman himself providing the brilliant arrangements. You will certainly find this Exciting Hong Kong living up to its name. It is surely one of the dominant reasons why the television series has received such wide public acceptance. Most of all, it is another in the long string of continuous triumphs of a prolific musical genius: LIONEL NEWMAN. -- NATT HALE ----------- Lionel Newman (January 4, 1916 – February 3, 1989) was an American conductor, pianist, and film and television composer. He won the Academy Award for Best Score of a Musical Picture for Hello Dolly! with Lennie Hayton in 1969. He is the brother of Alfred Newman and Emil Newman, uncle of composers Randy Newman, David Newman, Thomas Newman, Maria Newman, and grandfather of Joey Newman. His 11 nominations contribute to the Newmans being the most nominated Academy Award extended family, with a collective 92 nominations in various music categories. Born in New Haven, Connecticut, United States, Newman was one of ten children, the youngest of seven boys, born to Russian-Jewish immigrant parents. While the family had little money, the children's mother, Luba, was a strong woman who encouraged them to achieve. Newman migrated to Hollywood where, at the age of 16, he began conducting for impresario Earl Carroll. This was where he met his future wife, Beverly Carroll, an Earl Carroll Vanities showgirl, and niece of the impresario. Newman had formal training in New York, and after moving to Los Angeles, he continued his studies with Joseph Achron and Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. In the 1930s, Newman earned his stripes conducting national tours and working as the piano accompanist for Mae West. ... At the age of 18, he obtained a job playing piano on the Holland America ocean liner, the S.S.Rotterdam, with his "Newman's Society Orchestra". This trip had great significance for him; he had always wanted to make another such trip to find his mother's home. After serving an apprenticeship conducting and orchestrating live shows, Newman joined 20th Century Fox as a rehearsal pianist under the guidance of his brother, Alfred Newman, and by 1959, he had been promoted to Musical Director for Television there. This opened the doors to feature films. He was soon made vice president in charge of music for both television and features. This resulted in a promotion in 1982 to senior vice president of all music for Twentieth Century Fox Films.[1] He wrote several classic TV themes for Fox, including The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis, Adventures in Paradise, and Daniel Boone. He also composed the 1979 and 1982 fanfares for Fox. Lionel Newman's tenure with Twentieth Century Fox spanned 46 years with over 200 films to his credit, including How to Marry a Millionaire, North to Alaska, The Proud Ones, Road House, and Love Me Tender (Elvis Presley's first picture). He was musical director for all of Marilyn Monroe's films at Fox, in accordance with her request, including Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, There's No Business Like Show Business, River of No Return, and Let's Make Love, with the exception of Bus Stop which was directed and conducted by his brother, Alfred Newman and There's No Business Like Show Business which was co-directed and co-conducted by Alfred Newman. In November 2013, the Twentieth Century Fox Music Department was dedicated as “The Lionel Newman Music Building,” and a bronze plaque of Lionel, listing his composition and conducting credits was unveiled. Speaking to guests about Lionel's impact on film and television music, who he was as a friend, mentor and boss, and who he was as a family man were Steven Spielberg, John Williams, Lionel’s nephew, composer Randy Newman, and his grandson, Joey Newman. The dedication was attended by several hundred people, ... -- Wikipedia -----------/ Great Instrumental Music !
