Branch/Unit Description: The Interpretive Centers and Sales Branch develops and operates Interpretive Centers throughout the GGNRA, providing visitor information, orientation, and other visitor services. Parks Conservancy Interpretive Centers sell educational, functional, and proprietary park merchandise set amongst changing park exhibits. The Branch develops park-focused books, maps, interpretive, and branded merchandise for both our Interpretive Centers and for the Parks Conservancy’s wholesale and online sales programs. In addition, the Branch manages warehouses, distributes merchandise, and operates the Fee Collection program at Muir Woods. Interpretive Centers include the Alcatraz Park Stores, Muir Woods Visitor Center, Lands End Lookout, Warming Hut, Fort Point Park Store, Presidio Visitor Center, and Golden Gate Bridge Welcome Center. Position Overview: This is a temporary, non-exempt, full-time, non-benefitted position working 40 hours per week. Working at least one or both weekend days will be expected. Sales Associates provide outstanding visitor service and orientation to visitors from around the world. They sell interpretive merchandise, apparel, books, souvenirs, and other retail items unique to each location, restock items sold and maintain visual merchandising standards, assist with inventory management, operate the POS system, and handle cash and other forms of payment efficiently and accurately. These duties, as well as others, will be carried out under the direction of Managers, Assistant Managers, Team Leads, and Sales Associate II’s. Sales Associate I strives to be professional, friendly, and helpful in all visitor interactions – connecting visitors to the trails, paths, viewpoints, ecologies, cultural sites and historical features of the Golden Gate National Parks – the Presidio, Lands End, Marin Headlands, Muir Woods, Alcatraz, and beyond. Sales Associates will learn about the history, aesthetics, and construction challenges of the Golden Gate Bridge, as well as the history, challenges, and ecological significance of the Presidio. Sales Associates will also become familiar with the other Golden Gate National Parks and the programs, initiatives, and volunteer opportunities of the National Park Service, Presidio Trust, and Parks Conservancy. Sales Associates help visitors connect to as many of our Parks as possible while still being able to visit other popular San Francisco and the Bay Area attractions. It requires a certain amount of discernment and knowledge to be able to do this effectively, which is what we’ll train you to do. Our aim is to enhance the visitor experience and to encourage each visitor to visit our Parks again, whenever they visit San Francisco. Ultimately, we want to broaden the community of those who value, enjoy, and protect our Parks for future generations to help create our vision of Parks For All Forever. Towards this end, Sales Associates will explain to visitors the value and benefits of a Parks Conservancy membership and ask for donations at the Point of Sale as part of our “round-up” program. Work for this position will be performed primarily at the Golden Gate Bridge Welcome Center located on the Golden Gate Bridge Visitor Plaza. As part of the job, there will be numerous walks and visits to other sites within the Parks to explore, deepen connections, and to develop the first-hand knowledge and experience necessary to help visitors navigate and connect to our Parks. Reports To: Assistant Retail Manager II Essential Functions and Responsibilities: Visitor Engagement, Orientation, and Information • Welcome, engage, and deliver the highest standard of service to all visitors • Answer all visitor questions appropriately, accurately, with courtesy and respect • Provide orientation for the Golden Gate Bridge and the trails, history, natural, and cultural features of the Golden Gate National Parks • Provide orientation for San Francisco, city and state parks, and transportation options to and from destinations • Provide information to visitors about the programs, projects, volunteer opportunities, member events, and other ways of connecting to the Parks through the Parks Conservancy • Promote and sell memberships, explaining the value and benefits of joining the Parks Conservancy, and ask for donations through our “round-up” program Retail Sales and Operations • Sell interpretive, educational, and other merchandise to help the Conservancy meet its revenue goals, ring up sales on the POS system, and ask for round-up donations • Restock merchandise and maintain store cleanliness, neatness, and visual merchandising standards • Maintain positive and respectful relationships with the Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation District, National Park Service, Presidio Trust, U.S. Park Police, Park Partners, and Parks Conservancy colleagues • Communicate safety, product, facility, or maintenance issues to Managers and Team Leads • When there are immediate emergencies or threats to colleagues or visitors, notify Team Leads and Managers immediately. Communicate directly with Bridge Patrol if no Team Leads or Managers are available Training • Complete all required safety and harassment training • Incorporate safety, de-escalation, and bystander intervention training into all interactions with visitors • Participate in ongoing training about customer service, safety, de-escalation, sales, product knowledge, trails, natural history, inventory, and Conservancy policies, procedures, and programs Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: • Excellent visitor service skills and sales ability • Accurate and efficient cashiering skills • Strong written and verbal communication skills • Ability to communicate via email and to perform online training • Knowledge of professional standards and ability to fulfill them consistently, including: • Neat and clean appearance and appropriate attire • Reliability and punctuality for all scheduled shifts • Pleasant, friendly, helpful demeanor and body language • Ability to learn and to retain policies and procedures • Ability to be flexible and to adapt to change Education and/or Experience: • High School diploma or GED equivalent preferred • College or Junior College educational experience a plus • Retail, sales, hospitality, museum, Park Ranger, or related experience working with the public appreciated Certifications: First Aid and/or CPR training a plus Health and Safety: It is the goal of the Parks Conservancy to create and to maintain a safe and healthy workplace.
