What to expect: As a Senior Quantum Scientist, you will be at the forefront of our research and development, taking a leading role in both experimental design and the architecture of future generations of hardware. You will be responsible for driving innovation in coherent control, calibration, and benchmarking at scale, with a particular focus on enabling ultra-low error rates and system reliability across larger trapped-ion devices. Beyond hands-on experiments, you will help shape technical direction, mentor junior scientists, and ensure our work translates into scalable, fault-tolerant systems. What you’ll be responsible for: Leading the prototyping and characterisation of advanced coherent control schemes for trapped-ion qubits using laser and microwave fields. Driving system-level benchmarking and optimisation, ensuring near-term devices achieve world-leading performance and stability. Validating and integrating new trap technologies (e.g. on-chip electronics or photonics) to support scaling towards error-corrected architectures. Guiding junior scientists in experimental design, analysis, and presentation of results, while representing Oxford Ionics at external collaborations and conferences. Requirements You will need a PhD in physics or a closely related discipline, with a strong foundation in atomic or qubit-related physics and typically four or more years of post PhD experience in quantum control, either in academia or industry. Alongside deep technical expertise, you should be able to work independently, lead projects, and collaborate effectively within a small, fast-paced team. You will need: Proven expertise in experimental ion-trapping physics, ideally with a focus on quantum information processing and strong programming skills. Hands-on experience in spectroscopy, calibration, benchmarking of qubit systems, and debugging complex experimental setups. Strong proficiency with control software, hardware integration and data analysis. A track record of effective collaboration across teams and clear communication of complex scientific results through publications, talks, or conferences. Requirements You will need a PhD in physics or a related discipline, with a strong foundation in atomic or qubit-related physics. While prior postdoctoral or industry experience is valuable, this role is also open to candidates moving directly from a PhD. A solid background in quantum control, with hands-on experience in calibration, benchmarking, or coherent control of qubits, will be key to success. Practical skills in control software, hardware integration, or experimental data analysis are also important. You will need: Proven expertise in experimental AMO physics or quantum computing. Experience with trapped ions is preferred. Strong collaborative skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a fast-moving team. Prior experience in one or more of the following: spectroscopy or simulation of multi-level systems, characterisation of control hardware, gate fidelity benchmarking or running algorithms on hardware. We encourage applications from experimental physicists with expertise in Atomic, Molecular, and Optical (AMO) physics, particularly those with experience in the coherent control of quantum systems such as ultracold atoms, trapped ions, and diamond NV centers. Role and responsibilities Design, build, calibrate and maintain Quantum Computers based on neutral atoms. Participate and/or lead Research and Development projects for laser systems, Quantum Processing Units, quantum gate protocols, etc. for Quantum Computers. Create, test, and validate mathematical models of atomic physics behavior, and use the results to inform system design by translating high-level system requirements into specialized engineering subsystems. Self-start and successfully execute on a new R&D activity given a well-defined goal and constraints (e.g. resources, timeframe): gather requirements from stakeholders, drive definition of solution space, drive project execution. Develop, test, run, and debug software for conducting experiments and system tuning in production. Design, assemble, and test laser and optical systems. Ownership of subsystems to maintain high availability and high performance. Mentor and teach junior team members as indirect reports. Supervise interns.
