Troubling statistics such as just being an owner of a handgun makes an individual seven times more likely to die by gunfire than those who do not own firearms. And that gun owners are much more likely to kill someone they love by mistake then ever killing in self defense. And finally, you would have to face hard, unpleasant facts. There are reasons why civilians are not trusted with biological or chemical weapons and/or nuclear material. Humans historically have proven to be a murderous lot. A much wiser, saner and effective strategy would seem to be that excluding perhaps hard to hide hunting rifles, only law enforcement and military be allowed machines solely designed for the taking of a human life. Ah, but the constitution! Please remember the 2nd Amendment to the United States Constitution was written when we were an occupied people, and King George had blockaded the entire east coast so our ragtag group of farmers with shot guns could not purchase weapons or ammo. With 6 branches of the military, State, County & City police forces, America no longer has need of an armed militia.
