Blue Heron Community Cooperative is looking for a pastry baker who wants to help build an exceptional pastry program.
For nearly 50 years, Blue Heron has been crafting wholesome, scratch-made baked goods for the Olympia community. We produce pastries, cakes, cookies, bars, biscotti, and seasonal specialties that are sold in our bakery, at the Olympia Farmers Market, and through wholesale partners across the region.
We're proud of the traditions, recipes, and relationships that have brought us here. At the same time, we believe every bakery can continue to learn and improve. If you enjoy understanding how a kitchen works, spotting opportunities for thoughtful improvements, and helping a team become more organized and effective, we'd love to meet you.
As a worker- and consumer-owned cooperative, we believe the people doing the work are often the ones with the best ideas for improving it. We value craftsmanship, curiosity, collaboration, and a commitment to continuous learning.
-What You'll Do-
You'll spend much of your time baking, but we're equally excited to find someone who enjoys improving the craft and organization behind the work.
Responsibilities include:
*Preparing high-quality scratch-made pastries, cakes, cookies, bars, and other baked goods.
*Maintaining consistency, quality, and attention to detail in production.
*Helping keep production organized and running smoothly.
*Contributing ideas that improve recipes, workflow, efficiency, and product quality.
*Assisting with seasonal specials and new product development.
*Maintaining a clean, organized, and food-safe workspace.
*Working collaboratively with your teammates to support the success of the entire bakery.
*Helping train and support newer bakers as your experience grows.
-What We're Looking For-
We're looking for someone who enjoys both the craft of baking and the satisfaction of helping an established bakery continually improve.
Ideal qualifications include:
Professional experience with scratch baking.
Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
Pride in producing consistent, high-quality products.
A collaborative attitude and openness to giving and receiving feedback.
Strong attention to detail.
Knowledge of food safety practices.
Ability to work independently.
Ability to stand for an 8-hour shift and regularly lift 30 pounds (occasionally up to 50 pounds).
Current Washington Food Worker Card, or the ability to obtain one.
Experience with laminated doughs, cookies, pies, cake baking, recipe development, production planning, or mentoring other bakers is a plus.
-Opportunities to Grow-
This position offers meaningful opportunities to grow with the bakery.
As a worker cooperative, operational leadership roles are selected from within by fellow worker-members rather than hired directly. We value people who naturally take ownership, improve systems, mentor coworkers, and help the team succeed.
Applicants with experience coordinating production, organizing kitchen workflows, mentoring others, or leading bakery teams will find many opportunities to contribute as they become established within the cooperative. Over time, there may be opportunities to take on greater responsibility in production planning, product development, and stewardship of our pastry program, consistent with our cooperative selection process. This reflects the Pastry Circle Lead role's emphasis on coordinating production, supporting continuous improvement, mentoring, and stewarding the circle rather than acting as a traditional manager.
Schedule
We're generally looking for someone available for daytime shifts (approximately 8:00 AM–4:00 PM). Full-time is preferred, though part-time may be considered for the right candidate.
-Why Blue Heron?-
Free bread and coffee
Employee discounts
Stable schedule

Opportunity to become a worker-owner of the cooperative
A workplace where your ideas and experience can help shape the future of the bakery
