Location: San Rafael, CA (on-site with some remote flexibility; after-school and evening hours required)

Organization Overview
Enriching Lives through Music (ELM) is a nonprofit organization that provides immersive, tuition-free music education and academic support to primarily first-generation Latino youth from the Canal neighborhood of San Rafael, CA. Inspired by the El Sistema model, ELM believes in the power of music to create social change and transform lives. Through ensemble-based learning, performance opportunities, and mentorship, ELM helps students develop the confidence, discipline, and creativity needed to thrive in school and life. We are family-focused and embedded in the community we serve.
It is an exciting time at ELM as we celebrate a decade of service to the San Rafael community. We have grown from 15 to 170 students, with plans to reach 250 students within five years. We strive to engage the entire community through partnerships, community events, and performances in the Bay Area and beyond. ELM has recently acquired a building that will be renovated to become our home for music, culture, and community.

Position Overview
The Academic Program Coordinator is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of ELM’s Reading Buddies Program, which supports the reading comprehension and literacy development of elementary-aged music students through one-on-one volunteer tutoring. This part-time, hourly role is ideal for someone who is organized, collaborative, detail-oriented, and passionate about literacy and educational equity. The Program Coordinator also facilitates some math tutoring, and the program may expand to include other subjects as needed.
The Coordinator will oversee the recruitment, training, onboarding, and ongoing support of approximately 30-40 volunteers; select appropriate reading materials; and track student progress through data collection and evaluation. This position requires availability during after-school and early evening hours to align with student and volunteer schedules.
Key Responsibilities
Recruit, screen, and onboard volunteer Reading Buddies in collaboration with ELM staff
Provide training, resources, and ongoing support to ensure volunteer success
Develop and manage schedules and pairings of students and volunteers for after-school sessions
Facilitate one-on-ones and small group learning sessions
Select and curate age-appropriate and reading-level-appropriate books and literacy materials
Communicate regularly with volunteers, families, and program staff to ensure program effectiveness and resolve any issues
Track student attendance, engagement, and reading progress using simple tools and data systems
Collect and analyze data to evaluate program impact and identify areas for improvement
Coordinate occasional orientations, check-ins, and appreciation events for volunteers
Serve as the primary liaison for the Reading Buddies Program within the organization
Coordinate math tutoring, and other subjects as needed
Support IEP Evaluation request letters as needed, in partnership with families
Develop relationships within the school district
Develop relationships with potential collaborative partners
Support alignment of the program with ELM’s educational goals and family-focused culture
Qualifications
Experience coordinating educational or volunteer programs, ideally in literacy or academic support
Strong organizational, time management, and communication skills
Familiarity with selecting age- and reading-level-appropriate books and materials for early readers
Commitment to equity, inclusion, and working with diverse communities
Familiarity with literacy development for elementary-aged students a plus
Bilingual (Spanish/English) strongly preferred
Proficiency with basic technology tools (Google Workspace, spreadsheets, etc.)
Ability to work in San Rafael with consistent availability for after-school and evening hours, including Wednesdays 12-6pm
Availability for occasional weekend events and volunteer trainings
Bachelor's Degree or relevant experience
Compensation and Benefits
This is a part-time, hourly, non-exempt position, with a pay range of $30.00 - $35.00 per hour.
