POSITION TITLE: Director of Development REPORTS TO: Chief Executive Officer LOCATION: Los Angeles, CA CLASSIFICATION: Exempt SALARY: Up to $110,000.00 Director of Development Reporting to and in partnership with the CEO, the Director of Development (Director) will serve as a key leadership team member and an active participant in making strategic decisions affecting NHF. In partnership with the CEO, this position will spearhead fundraising efforts as NHF continues to grow. The DOD will design and implement a comprehensive plan for cultivating individual and philanthropic support. She or he will create and oversee the implementation of a strategic approach to fundraising which may include individual and major gifts, corporate donations, grant solicitation, event management, and in-kind resources. The DOD will have primary responsibility for establishing and implementing the infrastructure needed to grow NHF’s fundraising budget beyond institutional giving. S/he will expand and diversify NHF’s donor base/pipeline. In addition, s/he will work closely with the board of directors and support board members as they take on a more active fundraising role. It is expected that the amount raised by NHF will increase in future years as the DOD systematically and effectively strengthens the organization's overall fundraising capacity. The Director works under the immediate supervision of the CEO. Programmatic and administrative policies and precedents are applicable, but are stated in general terms; the Director uses initiative and resourcefulness in deviating from traditional methods or researching trends and patterns to develop new methods, criteria or propose new policies. Responsibilities and Initiatives To help NHF meet its growth goals, the Director of Development will: • Work interactively with one or more programs or functions and has significant cross-departmental impact; the work product and relationship-building impacts the entire organization. • Plan fund development activities a. Collaborate with the CEO to create a fund development plan which increases revenues to support the strategic direction of the organization. b. Implement the fund development plans, which may include major gifts, corporate donations, grant solicitation, event management, and in-kind resources, in accordance with ethical fundraising principles c. Monitor and evaluate all fundraising activities to ensure that the fundraising goals are being achieved d. Monitor trends in the community or region and adapt fundraising strategies as necessary • Organize fund development activities a. Develop and manage timelines for various fundraising activities to ensure strategic plans and critical fund-raising processes are carried out in a timely manner b. Develop policies and procedures for the development department which reflect ethical fundraising practices c. Oversee the planning and execution of special fundraising events as specified in the fund development plan to generate funds for the organization d. Identify and develop corporate, community and individual prospects for the organization's fundraising priorities e. Oversee the administration of a donor mailing list and database which respects the privacy and confidentiality of donor information f. Coordinate in-kind donations and make decisions regarding the issuing of receipts • Staff fund development activities a. Engage volunteers for special fund development projects using established volunteer management practices • Manage fund development budget a. Develop and gain approval for an annual income and expenditure budget for the fund development program b. Prepare regular reports on progress, budgets, receipts and expenditure related to fundraising and the management of the fund development activities c. Monitor expenses and analyze budget reports on fund development and recommend changes as necessary • Promote the organization a. Foster an understanding of philanthropy within the organization b. Work in partnership with CEO to develop a communication plan to promote the organization to its donors and maximize public awareness of the fundraising activities of the organization c. Coordinate the design, printing and distribution of marketing and communication materials for development efforts d. Build relationships with community stakeholders to advance the mission and fundraising goals of the organization Always follow NHF policies and procedures. Requirements • A degree in a related field and/or previous experience with similar projects, populations and methods or practices. • Previous management experience preferred. • Development/Fundraising: Proven success in development for a mid-size nonprofit. Experience running campaigns and success fundraising from multiple donor channels • Project Leadership: Experience in planning, leading, and managing development projects, including coordinating with peers to achieve desired outcomes, and tracking and reporting on progress to senior managers/board of directors • Entrepreneurial Spirit: Takes initiative and actively seeks to deepen current donor relationships and to forge new ones • Communications: Skilled in creating powerful, compelling written and oral communications for fundraising. Ability to convey complex ideas through brief, simple materials. Experience and credibility when presenting materials to external audiences • Influencing: Gets others to accept ideas by using convincing arguments, creates a win-win situation and responds appropriately to key stakeholders • Collaboration: Effective at working with others to reach common goals and objectives • Relationship Building: Skilled at establishing and cultivating strong relationships with peers, across different levels of the organization and externally Physical Requirements Working Conditions: • Works in office area under normal working conditions • Must travel to clients/collaborators as required Physical Demands • Most time spent sitting-in front of computer, in meetings, etc. Benefits PROGRAMS National Health Foundation is addressing the social determinants of health using a number of research-proven strategies.
