Nursery Laborer (Morgan Hill) NewPath Landscape Services, Inc. This non-exempt position is responsible for performing a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks which include providing guidance and advice to customers on the selection and care of plants, shrubs, trees; maintaining plant health care and ensuring an orderly work environment; and perform related work as required. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The examples of functions listed in this job description are representative, but not necessarily exhaustive, of any one position in this job classification. Management may assign other functions not listed herein at its sole discretion. • Appropriately greets every customer who enters the garden center; • demonstrates a professional approach to customer service at all times; • provides guidance on plant questions and needs as applicable; • assists customers with loading products into vehicles as needed; • communicates with customers regarding appropriate planting and watering instructions; • supports facility maintenance activities; • completes tasks on daily checklists; • maintains all pathways appropriately; • ensures all garden areas including display areas are appealing; • takes appropriate measures to keep the bulk material area safe and orderly; • keeps the nursery grounds presentable and well organized; • performs routine weeding procedures; • demonstrates professional knowledge of plant care procedures; • ensures plants are being watered accurately and appropriately; • loads and unloads potting and tagging plants and trees when needed; • maintains outdoor plant displays and surrounding areas, including weeding as needed; • communicates all plant issues to the Nursery Manager; • stocks hard goods; • assists with creating and maintaining plant displays and gardens; • supports landscape installation projects; • tags plants for design projects as requested; • pulls appropriate tagged plants for installation projects; • prepares plant material for installation projects in designated designer staging areas; • assists with receiving product deliveries; • maintains a clean work environment including breakrooms, bathrooms, and community spaces; • assembles potting trays (putting pots in trays), hanging pots and caged pots; • communicates with Nursery Manager when there are issues with products or products need to be reordered; • able to identify ornamental landscape plants, native landscape plants, invasive plants, weeds, local insect pests and signs of damage and local diseases by common name; • maintains watering hoses, pipes, and nozzles; • prunes trees, shrubs, and vines to encourage healthy growth; • demonstrates basic fertilizer application techniques; • recognizes plants with problems and addresses to the general needs of plants; • demonstrates proper watering techniques specific to plant conditions; • maintains tools and equipment to ensure safety; • role models PPE usage; • removes dead pots and cull plants not fit for sale; • immediately reports unsafe conditions or faulty equipment to the Crew Leader; • complies with all company policies and safety procedures; • takes direction well and works collaboratively with other employees; • ensures a safe, legally-compliant, and horticulturally friend nursery environment; • provides excellent service (e.g., accurate, complete, and timely) to clients, work-site partners, and Company staff in a courteous and efficient manner. COMPETENCIES • Safety: Performs all job functions safely; complies with all safety policies, procedures, and standards (e.g., PPE, proper lifting, wears seat belt when in a vehicle or equipment); reports all safety-related incidents to supervisor immediately; attends all safety meetings. • Results Oriented: Maintains focus on outcomes; is proactive and goal oriented; concentrates on meeting objectives, delivering to the required time, cost, and quality; holds performance as more important than process; sets specific, measurable goals, and takes efficient action to accomplish success. • Horticulture: Demonstrates professional knowledge of various nursey and garden center functions to include plant health care and maintenance, watering procedures, and environmental considerations; identifies pest management issues; assembles, plants and trays; transplants vegetation as appropriate. • Nursery Center Operations: Keeps the Garden Center neat, clean, and well organized; tags plants, pulls orders, and restocks materials; loads and unloads trucks and vehicles; adheres to standard operating procedures; performs equipment and tool maintenance. • Job Quality: Understands the relationship between job quality and customer service, satisfaction, and retention; ensures nursery and horticulture quality standards are met for every job. • Customer Service: Consistently exceeds customer expectations; keeps customers well-informed, listens to them attentively, and addresses their concerns; enacts a personal approach to customer service. • Interpersonal Skills: Treats others with respect, collaboration, and support in such a way that work relationships are improved and morale is increased; is approachable; has effective communication skills. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE An example of the preferred education, training, and/or experience that demonstrates possession of the knowledge, skills, and competencies for this position includes: at least one (1) year of professional nursery and garden center experience similar to that described above. SPECIAL NOTES, LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS Pre-employment: Incumbents must sign the Confidentiality, Non-disclosure, and Non-solicitation Agreement prior to their first day on the job. License: A valid driver’s license, which must be maintained throughout employment in this job classification, is required at the time of appointment. Language: Though not required, bilingual English and Spanish skills are desirable. Certifications: No certifications are required of this job classification. Working Conditions: Work is conducted in various horticulture environments (e.g., indoors, outdoors, shaded), exposed to varying temperatures, weather conditions, and noise levels; exposure to dust, pesticides, herbicides, grease, oils, dust, fumes, and electrical currents. Background Investigation: Incumbents must have a reputation for honesty and trustworthiness. Misdemeanor and/or felony convictions may be disqualifying depending on type, number, severity, and recency. Prior to appointment, candidates may be subject to a background investigation and/or drug test. Introductory Period: Incumbents appointed to this job classification serve an introductory period of three months.
