ShareThe Purring Parrot, a retail cat and bird resort in San Diego, has an immediate opening for an animal caretaker 4-5 shifts/weekly about 30-35+ hours per week. We might be the only cat and bird resort anywhere so this position is very specialized and a physically demanding job. Knowing cat and bird body language as well as the different species and breeds is a plus. This position is very hands-on with our animal guests and includes one on one kitty play times and communal playtime interactions with the birds. This is also a great opportunity to expand your knowledge of animal behavior and body language as well as learning about and respecting the intelligence of the pets we care for. This job requires time management, attention to detail and organizational skills. You will provide for the constant cleanliness of cages, floors, and rooms so being comfortable around animal waste is a must. You'll provide proper feeding and interactive playtime as well as keep track of personal items and activity levels for each pet. Not only will you be interacting with cats and birds but their human parents. You will be expected to explain resort policies, schedule appointments, answer the phone, give facility tours as well as train new employees. Applicants must: Be very detail oriented. Be fast, efficient and organized. Learn quickly and take initiative. Be a problem solver. Know how to clean and be thorough, cleaning is a huge part of this job. Use proper spelling. Have patience. Have 100% focus to learn and understand cat and bird body language. Have a GREAT sense of playfulness with cats and birds. Have excellent customer service skills. Not be allergic to cats and birds. Be able to tolerate loud noises, such as parrots. Be able to work independently and as a team player. Be able to lift 40 lbs. Have a strong work ethic. Must be available weekends and holidays. Previous parrot and cat experience is a plus be it volunteer, personal or professional. It is important to include this in your resume and/or cover letter so we can get an idea of your background. If this is not included we may not consider you. We are not a typical boarding facility and more like a human hotel, except we only cater to cats and birds.
