2003 Jetta wagon TDI, 5-speed manual swap. 251,000 miles. White with tan interior. It’s a one family car. Originally purchased by grandfather, then dad drove it, then was used by kids at college. I purchased the Jetta from the dad 3 years ago with a failing auto transmission for a manual swap project. Seller told me the engine had been replaced at some early point in its life because the grandfather didn’t believe in diesel engine oil. He used gas engine oil and destroyed the original engine. I don’t remember now when the seller told me engine was replaced exactly, but the engine has fewer miles than the chassis. Here’s what’s been done to the car in my hands. Swapped to an 02J 5 speed. Before installation, the 02J was rebuilt with every single bearing (all 14) replaced with new. 1st and 2nd synchros were replaced. 3rd, 4th, and 5th were visually good and measured well within spec. 5th gear oiling modifications were performed (drilled holes to allow oil flow into 5th gear compartment and added the 5th gear oil feed part from later generation 0A4 manuals). All springs and dogs in the shift hubs were replaced with new. Shift tower was rebuilt with the kit from Cascade German. The rebuild was documented in a thread on TDIclub.com (02J Rebuild Saga). New gear shifter and boot. New Vallejo single mass clutch and flywheel kit. New clutch fork pivot pin. New dogbone transmission mount. New rear main seal. Injection pump was resealed. New fuel injector return hoses. New fuel filter. New air filter. New valve cover. Cleaned carbon build up out of EGR valve and reinstalled with new O-ring. Engine timing was checked and reset (was off a couple of teeth on the flywheel). Nearly new front brake rotors and pads. New front lower control arm bushings (solid Audi TT style). New windshield. New engine air filter and cabin air filter. Oil change. The AC works. The original cloth interior was tired. I’ve done a partial leather interior swap. All door panels were replaced with leather. The manual no-heat front seats were replaced with heated electric leather seats. Seat memory is there but was not wired. Can be easily done. Just need to run a couple of wires to tap into the CAN bus. Cupholders added. This is an original California car. The body is in very good condition. No rust. I found one door ding. I resprayed the front and rear bumpers. I have some service records going back to 2012. The timing belt was done by a mechanic at 225,000 miles. The car drives very good. Engine is all stock with the 11 mm automatic injection pump and injectors. Good platform for a tuner project or drive as is. The car is currently under non-operation with the CA DMV. There are no registration back fees.
