Description

About the Project We are building a next-generation Quiet NAS Server: a rack-based, rotational-drive, custom storage system that combines enterprise-class reliability with whisper-quiet operation. This internship offers a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of hardware engineering, storage software, and acoustic design—turning server racks into something suitable for both datacenters and creative workspaces. What You’ll Do Assist in the design, assembly, and testing of a custom rack-based NAS server. Explore rotational drive arrays (RAID, ZFS, TrueNAS Scale) and help tune performance. Research and apply noise-reduction techniques: airflow optimization, vibration dampening, acoustic isolation. Benchmark performance (IOPS, throughput, latency) while balancing quiet operation vs. power efficiency. Document findings, contribute to knowledge guides & build logs, and share learnings with the community. Collaborate with mentors on potential next-gen NAS concepts (hybrid rack systems, modular expansions, green energy considerations). What You’ll Learn Practical skills in server hardware assembly and rack infrastructure. Linux/Unix and storage OSes (TrueNAS, Proxmox, Ubuntu Server). RAID/ZFS fundamentals, snapshotting, replication, and backup best practices. Thermal and acoustic engineering principles in server design. Hands-on troubleshooting of real hardware (HBAs, fans, power supplies, enclosures). How to approach design trade-offs between performance, cost, and silence. Who You Are Student or early-career technologist with curiosity for hardware, storage, and acoustics. Familiarity with basic Linux administration (command line, package installs, file systems). Interest in servers, NAS, or custom PC builds. Bonus: knowledge of RAID, ZFS, or TrueNAS; experience with rack hardware; or acoustic/thermal engineering coursework. Perks Hands-on access to cutting-edge server hardware. Mentorship from experts in storage, acoustics, and system architecture. Opportunity to contribute to open-source documentation. Flexible, project-oriented internship (remote & hybrid options available). A standout project for your resume/portfolio—showing employers you’ve built something unique. Duration: Project based Location: On Location / Remote / Hybrid
