Purpose of the Job: The Assistant General Manager (AGM) supports the General Manager in overseeing daily restaurant operations, ensuring exceptional guest experiences, operational efficiency, and compliance with California labor and safety regulations. This role balances hands-on leadership with administrative responsibilities, including staff development, scheduling, financial oversight, and vendor coordination. The AGM serves as a key leader in maintaining a positive workplace culture, upholding company standards, and driving the restaurant’s overall success.
ABOUT YOU You’re a seasoned hospitality professional with at least 5 years of restaurant management experience and 2+ years as an Assistant General Manager or senior supervisory role. You thrive in a fast-paced, high-volume environment, balancing big-picture strategy with hands-on leadership. You’re motivated by creating exceptional guest experiences while keeping operations efficient, compliant, and financially strong. You’re organized, detail-oriented, and skilled at managing all aspects of restaurant operations—from scheduling and labor management to compliance, budgeting, and vendor relations. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Leadership & Team Development
Lead by example, demonstrating professionalism, hospitality, and integrity in all interactions.
Supervise and support department leads and hourly staff to ensure operational efficiency and team cohesion.
Provide coaching, mentorship, and feedback to staff, encouraging growth and accountability.
Partner with the General Manager on recruiting, onboarding, performance management, and staff development.
Operations & Guest Experience
Ensure smooth daily operations, maintaining a visible presence during peak hours.
Set and uphold service standards to deliver consistently excellent guest experiences.
Address guest concerns promptly, balancing empathy with adherence to company policies.
Oversee scheduling, labor management, and staff coverage to support both hospitality and compliance goals.
Financial Oversight & Administration
Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting.
Monitor costs and drive revenue through effective sales strategies and cost controls.
Review and approve invoices, track expenses, and maintain compliance with purchasing protocols.
Ensure accurate payroll processing, timekeeping, and adherence to wage and hour laws.
Compliance & Workplace Standards
Enforce all California labor, wage, and safety regulations, including meal and rest break compliance.
Ensure a safe and healthy workplace by adhering to all OSHA and health code requirements.
Model and reinforce company policies around professionalism, equity, and inclusion.
Maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion in personnel and business matters.
Collaboration & Communication
Act as a key partner to the General Manager, providing input on strategy and operations.
Communicate clearly and consistently with staff, department leads, and ownership.
Coordinate with outside vendors and service providers as needed to ensure successful operations.
Support company initiatives and contribute to long-term planning and brand development.
Minimum Requirements
5+ years of progressive experience in restaurant or hospitality management, with at least 2 years in an Assistant General Manager or senior supervisory role.
Proven ability to manage front-of-house operations in a high-volume, upscale dining environment.
Strong understanding of California labor laws, wage and hour compliance, scheduling, and workplace safety.
Must be 21 years of age or older.
Current California Food Handler’s Card (ServSafe or equivalent); ability to obtain additional certifications if required.
Demonstrated leadership skills, including team development, conflict resolution, and performance management.
Flexible schedule, including late nights, weekends, and holidays.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with P&L oversight, budgeting, and cost control.
Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems (e.g., Toast, Aloha, Micros).
Background in vendor relations, purchasing, and inventory management.
Track record of building and mentoring high-performing teams in a hospitality setting.
Strong guest service orientation with the ability to handle escalated concerns diplomatically.
Experience supporting multi-unit operations or new concept openings.
