Lead Production Roaster (NE Washington, DC)
Lead Production Roaster
Primary
-Lead a team of production roasters
-Cover roughly 40-80% of production roasting each week (depending on volume)
-Offer guidance and feedback on Loring S15 operation and roasting workflow
-Track roast fulfillment during M-Thurs production cycles, check for spreadsheet errors, cross reference Cropster and Roast Calculations sheet throughout the roast day
-Make schedule for production roasters each week, resolve scheduling conflicts
-Keep training documents and workflow references available and up to date at roaster desk
-Ensure all roasters complete roaster safety training/quiz and follow through with safety requirements each shift
-Keep all roast references up to date in accordance with communication from Director of Coffee
-Maintain green storage area and open green bags on roaster pallets
-Direct roasting team in keeping roasting area clean and organized â delegate regular sweeping, mopping, dusting, cleaning under pallets
-Keep storage key updated and green storage area prepped for deliveries
-Be present for all green deliveries, spearhead checking in bags and organizing pallets
-Take green inventory at the end of each week, weigh open bags, consolidate spreadsheet with Cropster inventory
-Track deliveries and communicate updates (Director of Coffee and Operations Manager will also track deliveries)
-Manage labels for roaster pallets, check bags are correct and white boards updated on a a daily basis
-Schedule weekly machine cleaning, cover machine cleaning at least two Fridays per month (delegate to other production roasters for other Fridays)
-Track preventative maintenance for Loring S15, keep maintenance log up to date for weekly, monthly, and seasonal tasks
-Coordinate with Operations Manager to schedule maintenance that requires a technician, track all technician visits
-Work with all team members to help keep the brew area and dish area clean (regularly contribute to dishes, help cafiza the coffee urns, keep espresso bar clean, etc.)
-Oversee upkeep for SOVDA Pearl Mini Coffee Color Sorter â dial in sorter profiles for now coffees, recalibrate where needed based on feedback from production and sight observation
-Keep yield SOVDA weights updated, track yield % on weekly basis, communicate yields to Production Manager
-Communicate with Production Manager / Ops for any issues with maintenance / red air compressor
Secondary
-Participate in 1-3 quality control cupping sessions with Director of Coffee and other team members per week (typically Tuesday and Friday)
-Lead one weekly cupping open to team members each week
-Cup independently, run triangulations if/when primary tasks are completed/roast volume is light
-Share notes with Director of Coffee from each cupping
-Regularly brew menu coffees and share notes and recipes
-Cover production QC with Ops Manager when Director of Coffee is absent
-Assist with First Friday Cuppings with Director of Coffee & Ops Manager
-Contribute to development of new coffees by executing test batches where needed and offering tasting notes
Requirements
-Willingness to help with and lead physical tasks including unloading new pallets of green coffee and reorganizing/consolidating existing pallets
-Team-oriented, self-aware, understanding of how to balance division of labor fairly and efficiently between a small team
-Availability to manage and solve scheduling conflicts or occasionally cover additional roasting when other production roasters are out
-2+ years of roasting experience, Loring experience preferred but not essential
-2+ years experience managing or leading a team
-Willingness to use down time during light cycles productively
-Ability to regulate workload reasonably (i.e. not routinely overextending nor routinely doing the minimum requirements) and communicate any issues or concerns to Operations Manager
-Interest in coffee and drive to produce a quality product
-Proficient in Google Sheets, Cropster, etc.
-Detail oriented and thorough
-Able to lift up to 50 lbs repeatedly
-Able to lift up to 70 lbs with assistance
