$1,400 / 7br - Calling all artists, farmers, makers for intentional community (Flatbush)

address2329 Nostrand Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11210, USA

Description

Calling all artists, cooks, farmers, puppeteers, musicians, dancers, carpenters, scientists, makers and bakers of all kinds to join our flowing growing communal house. 1 October sublet + 3 long term positions available. ___________________ Hi! We’re Swamp Dog Hobble (named after a native plant 🌱). We’re a communal house (a house! a community!) in Flatbush, and a few of us are leaving. Maybe you’d like to live here. We’re looking for 2-3 new members to join us within the next few months (timelines flexible) and co-sign the new lease come December. Here are the basic specs: Four bathrooms, seven bedrooms, one tiny guest room (the Panic Room), two kitchens, at least four common rooms, a music room with a grand piano An emerging food forest with a Hügelkultur mound, raised beds, greens, veggies, fruit trees and 2,600 pounds of compost ~1000 books, a washer/dryer, large porch, large garage with a wood-shop and a gazebo (soon-to-be greenhouse or dance studio?!) We live near Brooklyn College, at the end of the 2/5 lines, about 45 minutes from downtown Manhattan, 25 minutes from Jacob Riis beach. Average monthly cost of living is ~$1400 which includes rent, utilities, groceries, the cost of which is always shared. This number fluctuates from person to person in proportion to income and general financial anxiety; not based on the qualities of this or that room (though lately our contributions have been similar). So yeah, this communal house thing. Basically, we like to be involved in each other’s lives. We sit down at least once a week for dinner together, we check in with each other, we paint rooms new colors; there’s big dinner parties, live shows, sourdough focaccia bakes on the weekends when the weather is right; we like projects, we like to do stuff; we draw in the stairways, move furniture around; every Thursday/Friday we cook about 10 gallons of food that gets distributed at Tompkins Distro. What else? Raucous laughter. CDs playing on the first floor. Piano duets. Sharing food with neighbors. Everyone’s always in the middle of telling a story. One of us bakes croissants and makes sure we never run out. We aim for seven in the house. We’ve a moving river, an evolving, transforming community. Join the momentum, come with your ideas and co-create with us! If this fits what you're looking for, write to us at and share your responses to these prompts: What is your name, and what pronouns do you use? Why do you want to live here? How do you express your creativity? Tell us about a time you engaged with someone who had significant difference in values from you (beyond pineapple on pizza) What’s something that gets you fired up? We're excited to hear from you, to get to know you better, and to meet your curiosity.
