Shop / Production Assistant for Popular Engineering YouTube Channel (Idaho Springs)
We’re looking for someone who’s as comfortable turning a wrench as they are setting up a camera, who is reliable, motivated, and curious. At Strange Parts, no two days are the same—you might be wiring up a prototype in the morning, wrangling C-stands and lights in the afternoon, and offloading terabytes of footage by the evening. If you love learning new skills, keeping a shop humming, and being right in the middle of ambitious engineering projects and YouTube production, this is the job for you. This is a full-time, in-person position. We work out of a 100+ acre property in the mountains 20 minutes from Idaho Springs, Colorado—you’ll need to be willing to commute there 5 days a week, in all sorts of weather. About Strange Parts: Strange Parts is a production company managing multiple YouTube channels and associated social media accounts. The flagship channel, Strange Parts, has nearly 2 million subscribers and explores the ins and outs of manufacturing and technology. Known for its deep dives into difficult engineering projects—such as making a working iPhone from parts bought in the electronics markets in Shenzhen—the channel also provides behind-the-scenes looks at some of the most interesting and innovative factories around the world. Stranger Parts is an expansion channel focusing on tool reviews and behind-the-scenes content, allowing for deeper explorations and more spontaneous projects. Electric Ranch is a new channel exploring the intersection of technology and rural living, with content such as building our own cellular network and automated snowplows. What You’ll Do: Keep the workshop running smoothly: tools organized, parts stocked, everything where it belongs. Operate and maintain shop gear—3D printers, CNC machines, soldering stations, power tools. Help build prototypes, assemble projects, solder, wire, and fabricate. Prep materials, handle shipments, and make sure projects aren’t held up waiting for parts. Set up, run, and maintain cameras, lights, audio gear, and support equipment (GH5s, GoPros, C-stands, the works). Shoot videos and thumbnails that look great and tell the story. Offload and organize footage (DIT) so nothing gets lost. Anticipate what’s needed for upcoming projects and shoots. Keep things moving smoothly on set—hauling gear, troubleshooting problems, or just making sure the right tool is at hand. Document builds and shop processes so the team can stay organized. What We’re Looking For: A background in engineering, fabrication, or tech (formal or self-taught—we don’t care as long as you can do the work). Experience with video production, particularly for YouTube, is a big plus, but curiosity and willingness to learn matter more. Comfortable with both shop tools and camera gear, and ready to pick up new skills fast. Organized and detail-oriented—you notice problems before they become disasters. A self-starter who can also collaborate well with a small team. Deep curiosity and a drive to learn—whether it’s mastering a new tool, figuring out how a machine works, or picking up new production skills on the fly. Able to handle the physical side of the job: lifting gear, moving materials, working at both heights and altitude. What We Offer: An LGBTQ+ friendly and inclusive environment. A job where you’ll learn constantly—engineering, fabrication, video production, and more. The chance to work on projects people all over the world get excited about. A unique work experience that combines cutting-edge technology with Colorado mountain life. Opportunities to regularly learn new skills in engineering, fabrication, and video production. Variety—every day brings something different, from building robots to setting up film shoots to exploring new technologies. Experience: Video production: 1 year (Preferred) Engineering, Fabrication, or Tech: 2 years (Preferred) Idaho Springs, CO 80452 (Required) Work Location: In person
