Description

Has overall responsibility for the news or commentary department within the editorial department. Provides supervision and guidance for a staff of editors, writers, reporters, and support personnel. Develops strategic plan for department. Sets and approves commentary workflow for all outside contributions. Represents the company at industry events. Works closely with all other departments to ensure quality of products. Coordinates the development of new products. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned to meet the department’s objectives: Responsible for quality and quantity of news or commentary analysis. Works closely with editorial’s executive team member to set tone, direction, and policies for the department. Hires and oversees editors, reporters, contributing editors, columnists, or other analysis writers. Coordinates the work of contributing editors or chief correspondents, including selecting publication location for articles. Coordinates content solicitation efforts, and edits and manages outside author contributions and other editorial content for publication. Works with publication editors on managing the standards for accepting and rejecting all commentary submissions. Works with other editorial departments to develop enterprise and analysis stories that will run in the magazines. Oversees training of new editors and reporters, and coordinates continuing education for existing employees; editors, contributing editors, columnists, and other analysis writers. Develops and implements budget and strategic plans for the department. Analyzes sales and market research to determine how to better serve customers. Represents the department (and company) at industry and other social events. May speak at industry events. Builds and maintains ongoing communication and relationships with industry leaders. Is involved in product development, generating ideas for new ways of doing things. Liaisons between own department and other departments. Coordinates the work of the investigative team, including story development. Works to support the company’s mission, including investigating and promoting transparent tax administration. Writes weekly blog or otherwise creates thought leadership to help promote the company. May write columns and/or edit articles. KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS: Ability to supervise, direct, and train a diverse group of employees. Significant editorial experience or managerial or supervisory experience required. In-depth knowledge of legislative, judicial, and administrative tax issues. Exceptional planning and leadership skills. Excellent written and oral communication skills, as well as interpersonal skills. Strong analysis, judgment, and problem-solving skills. Works well in a team environment, and is able to develop and motivate a team. Requirements JD or advanced non-legal degree, and significant writing/editing experience strongly preferred. Consideration will be given to equivalent education, training and/or experience. 8+ years of related experience in tax law or publishing/editorial Experience in the practice of tax law or an LLM in taxation desired Knowledge of foreign languages a plus.
