Research Scientist (Biochemistry) (Wage Offer: $80,000/yr): Conduct biochemical research to detect biodegradation of perishable inventory post-harvest. Research and optimize expression yield of protein cultures and scale up protein production using a novel organism for different biochemical applications. Monitor cell growth and levels of expression using various techniques such as optical density measurements, SDS-PAGE, and western blotting. Perform complex data collection, analysis, and presentation. Conduct calibration testing to ensure proprietary sensors detect shelf-life data properly. Collaborate with electrochemical and engineering teams to troubleshoot sensor issues. Assist in the operations of the Research & Development laboratory to ensure smooth functioning by maintaining inventories, ordering necessary chemicals, and preparing molecular cloning and transformation for expression. Stay up-to date on post-harvest ripening literature research and conduct experiments to enhance storage, monitor produce, and ensure quality control. Research new technology and use new instruments to monitor fruit parameters and discover methods to improve shelf life and reduce food waste. Telecommuting permitted 2 days per week within 20 miles of Philadelphia, PA. REQUIREMENTS: Master’s degree or foreign equivalent in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a related scientific field. SKILLS: Must have experience with the following: 1. Experience in protein research in bacterial or yeast expression systems. 2. Experience conducting post-harvest research in a laboratory (industry, agricultural or academic). 3. Experience with expression optimization, cell culture, and colony hybridization. 4. Experience with chemical laboratory techniques and instruments including optical density measurement, nanodrop spectrophotometer, Gel electrophoresis, chromatographic techniques, and Western blotting. 5. Experience using R or Python to process and analyze datasets.
