I am a 62-year-old singer/songwriter who lives in Kent and regularly performs in Maple Valley, which is sort of my target market. I have performed in several bands over the years. I have done the classic rock thing, the wine bar duo/trio thing and even worked with a maritime trio for several years. My specialty is fingerstyle guitar and I’m good at harmonies (I sing baritone). As a side interest, I am also a Bruce Cockburn specialist and do YouTube tutorials on his guitar technique. I play a little bass and ukulele and can pick up different guitar styles easily (although I was never all that good at improvising leads but would like to work on that). I own pro guitar and PA gear and know how to use it. I am recently retired and that gives me lots of bandwidth (theoretically). \n\n\r\n\nI didn’t really care all that much for doing classic rock with a full band, I loved the wine bar trio but my good friend and bass player passed away and the maritime trio that followed involved too much regional travel (although we were highly successful) so I dropped out of that during the pandemic. I’m doing okay as a solo act but I could use a little inspiration, and I really miss working with other people. \n\n\r\n\nWhat I’d like is to first keep it local to Kent, Covington and Maple Valley or thereabouts so I’m not doing a lot of commuting for practices and gigs. I hate traffic (and don't we all). \n\n\r\n\nSecondly, I’m not sure what I’m looking for, but I don’t think it is another guitar player necessarily and I can’t see a use for percussionists. I’d be wildly enthusiastic about getting to work with people who play instruments like mandolin, banjo, fiddle, doghouse bass and so on. This could cover a wide range of instruments because I’m open to doing Celtic, Old-Timey, Jug Band, Bluegrass or anything else that I enjoy listening to but that puts me out of my comfort zone and forces me to work on learning something new and interesting (although I’m just as open to doing the Americana and singer/songwriter stuff that is already in my wheelhouse). A multidisciplinary approach would be just as good as there’s a lot of work to be had if you can specialize in Irish music around St. Patrick’s day, in Christmas music around the end of the year and in all sorts of other fun stuff the rest of the time. The first person that I do end up working with pretty much gets to pick the main genre and we’ll try to stick with that going forward as we add people.\n\n\r\n\nI also would prefer to work with people who can sing harmony and could cover all the different vocal ranges. This aspect would be of primary importance to me, so getting females and/or falsetto singers in there would be critical and altos and bassos would be of course great. \n\n\r\n\nI would also prefer to work with somewhat seasoned performers or at least people who are very good at what they do. I am a semi-pro at best and am weak on theory so please don’t think I’m setting an outrageously high bar here. I’m just looking forward to working with experienced musicians who hopefully have some ideas about stage presence. I don’t have any specific ideas about age but do figure that people who have similar life experiences tend to work together better (although that could be complete hogwash for all I know). \n\n\r\n\nLastly I’m going to have to insist on something more than a vague response to this ad to conserve time and effort for all parties involved. We pitch original songs, but we keep our live sets sprinkled with some favorites to help with audience engagement. The music carries elements of folk and blues, tends to be uptempo, and we take our time with the arrangements. Inspirational artists include Tom Petty, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Dire Straits, and some heavier Soundgarden-ish stuff. We are not necessarily trying to go retro, but we do draw from some older sources. We are more of a “Song” band than a “Jam” band, but that does not mean we don’t open up every now and then.\r\n\nThe COMMITMENT: We perform in the area about once a month. In the summer we try to hit outdoor venues and the rest of the year its mostly clubs. Occasionally we take bookings for parties and private events. Yes, we get paid. Everyone has decades of performing experience and professional gear. We do aspire to cultivate a following and play larger venues when we step out. We have also started on recording a full-length vinyl release of original songs. We have done basic tracks for about half of it. The other half is still in an arranging stage. There is time for a new brother-in-arms to make a creative stamp on the output, but we are moving forward every week.\r\n\nThe EXPECTATIONS: Joining an existing band can be awkward for some people. Yes, we will incorporate some songs you want to do into our set and we will accommodate some of your creative arrangement ideas…BUT we expect you to learn our repertoire first. This will mean learning some songs independently before we even rehearse together. For our part, we can provide recordings (Both studio recordings and field recordings from live performances), chord charts (Sorry, I don’t write music notation but we can do this cowboy-style), and lyric sheets if interested. An audition would be conducted by providing a short list of songs (With recordings and chord charts), allowing you to select 3-5 choices from that list, and then coming in and showing us what you can do.
