Welcome to Virginia Park Historic District. Our brick street and homes date back to the 1890s-1910s, and our name was changed subsequently to reflect physical changes and community pride. Residents organized and renamed Virginia Avenue to Virginia Park Street, from Woodward to Grand River. Detroiters had grown massive trees and landscaped homes and public spaces to create a park like thoroughfare for their families and visitors to enjoy. The neighborhood sadly declined, beginning with the Great Depression. Zoning was changed to allow businesses to use the homes, and the neighborhood fell into major disrepair by the early 80s. At that point, a wave of Black young professionals began moving in and effectively pioneered the community we enjoy today. Numerous Black doctors, lawyers, and entrepreneurs moved into rehabbed historic homes in the 80s and 90s. They formed a strong network of community groups throughout New Center. When General Motors pulled out in 1996, these residents stayed, continued raising their families, and held New Center together. 15 years ago, Virginia Park Street leadership got together with renewed energy. We heard and discussed our elder’s great expectations, and we prioritized the unmet community needs in 2010 New Center. Together we marshaled know-how and resources to bring vacant housing online and make our community shine brighter for those living here. Ms. Robert Sanders lived on the 100 block of Virginia Park Street for 35 years, often hosting community functions at her home and garden and serving as Vice President and Treasurer for our community boards. Ms. Sanders walked us down to the 800 block in 2013, where 8/10 homes stood vacant and in major disrepair. You are invited to come and see how our block looks now.
