Continue reading below to learn about the role and the perks of working for Animal Humane Society! 🐾 Pay: $20 -$27 per hour based on experience and certifications Job Purpose: The Veterinary Technician is responsible for providing the care, examination, evaluation, and treatment of animals in accordance with established policies and under the direction of veterinarians.  Benefits: (see additional benefits below) Health, dental, vision insurance and more!  15+ days of paid time off for a full year  4 floating holidays (# of days per year is based on start date)   401k Retirement Plan Schedule: Full Time; 40 hours/week (5 8-hour shifts) Must be available at least 1 weekend day 8-hour shifts between the hours of 7am - 8:15pm Tuesday-Friday and 7am-6pm on Saturdays/Sundays/Mondays Location: Golden Valley, MN Application Requirements: Please include current resume and cover letter Interview Process: Virtual Interview via Microsoft Teams; followed by on-site interview and job shadow What You'll Be Doing: Veterinary Care: Perform daily treatments, administer medication, and monitor shelter animals in accordance with shelter policy and under the direction of veterinarians. Complete medical procedures and assist veterinarians in surgical procedures following established protocols. Evaluate incoming animals for possible placement, including physical exams and behavior evaluations. Process fostered animal returns and release. Humanely euthanize animals which are not a candidate for adoption or upon request of owner. Work collaboratively with other staff and departments to ensure animals are being cared for properly and moving through the system efficiently. Customer Service: Greet customers as they arrive for scheduled appointments. Provide customer counseling on results of the evaluation process, which could include providing additional re-homing resources or humane euthanasia for animals not viable for adoption. Ensure appointments are completed in a timely manner. Collect appropriate fees from customers. Schedule walk-in customers for stray animals or emergency appointments. Communication and Culture: Communicate in a positive and professional manner with customers, other employees, and volunteers. Promote a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion to make AHS a welcoming environment for all. Technology: Accurately update animal records in PetPoint. Manage and view work schedule in Makeshift. Clock in and out of shifts using ADP. Monitor AHS email and other messaging software. Other duties as assigned. Additional Information: Schedule and Attendance: Required to be on time to scheduled shifts during operational hours which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays. Attend and participate in regular team meetings and one-on-one meetings with direct leader. May be required to work at a different site based on department needs. May be required to attend occasional off-site meetings and events. Work Environment: Environment can be dirty, wet, warm, and humid. Exposure to zoonotic diseases and pests such as fleas and ticks. Possibility of being bitten or scratched. Exposure to unpleasant odors, chemicals, and noises, including barking. May be exposed to extreme weather conditions including but not limited to cold, heat, rain, and snow when outside. Requirements What we're looking for: Experience: Experience as a Veterinary Technician, Veterinary Technician certification or related schooling required. Skills: Strong customer service and communication skills. Strong attention to detail, multi-tasking and time-management skills. Proficient with computers, specifically a working knowledge of Microsoft products. Physical Demands: Must be able to lift, carry, and handle animals and other items up to 50 lbs. unassisted.  For animals and other items over 50 lbs., assistance from another team member is required.  Prolonged periods of standing and walking. Emotional Demands: Ability to be emotionally resilient while working in a shelter setting. Must be comfortable handling a variety of animals with a wide range of behavioral and medical needs, including the use of humane euthanasia. Transportation: Reliable transportation required. Animal Care Technician
The Animal Care Technician works with the Vivarium Manager to ensure that vertebrate and invertebrate animals receive care in accordance with applicable regulations, policies, and experimental protocols. Works to help ensure that appropriate support services for investigators are furnished at Middlebury’s AAALAC-accredited Laboratory Animal Facility and satellite animal laboratories. This is a full time, benefits eligible, hourly position with a hiring range of $28.14 - $35.19 per hour. Core Responsibilities: Maintains animal rooms and other facility areas in accordance with a high standard of sanitation, to include sweeping, vacuuming, and washing walls, floors, equipment and shelving according to the schedules for these activities. Serves as a member of the animal care team, using knowledge of animal health and husbandry to perform daily care, health assessments, and medical treatments for vertebrate and invertebrate animals as needed. Provides experienced technical support including, but not limited to, administering medications, performing treatments, sexing, assisting with surgeries, providing pre- and post-operative care, and administering injections and euthanasia. Performs quality assurance testing and monitoring for systems and equipment, including but not limited to cage washer, surgical equipment, and autoclave operation, sanitization efficacy, water quality, medication and chemical expiration dates, and evaluation of vendor statistics on animals to be ordered. Assists in maintaining required facility records and data, including health records, animal census and husbandry data, and drug inventories, and in developing, implementing, and updating procedures, checklists, and other documentation as required and appropriate. Participates in programs reviews, regulatory site visits and inspections as required, which would include, but not be limited to, IACUC, AAALAC, and USDA. Conducts training sessions for staff, faculty, and students, as required. Ensures that stocks of required feed, supplies, and equipment are maintained at all times. Requirements Minimum qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree, or an Associate’s degree with equivalent additional experience; must be AALAS ALAT certified or eligible. Six months of experience in a laboratory animal facility is required with a BA/BS; 18 months with an AA/AS. Must be focused, detail-oriented, reliable, and able to work both independently and as an effective member of the animal care team and with other staff, students, faculty, and administrators. Effective written and oral communication skills, including the ability to apply relevant scientific concepts and terminology, and to seek to improve knowledge and skills by attending such continuing education activities as meetings or seminars. Affinity for animals and respect for their welfare is essential. Must have a working knowledge of applicable federal and state regulations, and with up-to-date principles and techniques in laboratory animal husbandry. Overtime, weekend, and holiday work is expected. Physical Demands and Working Conditions: Must be able to lift up to 60 lbs. (bags of feed and bedding), and to roll loaded tall cage and cage wash carts throughout the facility and must be capable of bending and stretching to inspect and change cages at low- and eye-level, disinfect walls and ceilings, and wet-mop floors. Must not have any allergies to animals to a degree that prevents performance of required duties.
