1991 VW Westfalia Subaru Conversion. I bought this Westie 22 years ago with a bad engine. I’ve owned four of these over 30 years. I selected this one because I know what I wanted to do. In Los Angeles I met Leon Korkin who previously put a Subaru engine in 12 other vans with great success! The stock Westie engines made about 90 HP. With the conversion I now have 135HP! Only one mechanic with a shop close to me is the only one who has worked on the van after the install. I found Pete driving by his shop and I noticed his lot was full of Westies and Vanagons. This has been an amazing Van… I keep up the maintenance because I am a Road Tripper with my Ex-Wife and later several girlfriends one with a Child. Financially I did well with work and invested in the Van when required. I have receipts for all of the GoWesty parts and work orders for my mechanic Pete. Here is the Van story. Van Mileage is 234,035 with an Automatic Transmission. The AC compressor was disconnected when the engine was swapped. The duct channels are still in original condition . The Subaru engine has about 120,000 I bought the engine from Subaru. It is a Crate Engine 2.2L that I broke in well… Knowing I would own it and depend on it for many years! The Transmission was rebuilt by Pete with about 180,000 and Pete added a secondary radiator fan to keep the engine cool when stuck in traffic in Los Angeles. At 230,000 a new starter was installed with a 6 Volt in line booster. I’ve replaced the rear CV joints several times. 13 Months ago both axles and CV joints were replaced and improved with Porsche components at Mountain Bus Werks. Also Can Cafe in Ft. Collins replaced the Tranny Torque Converter and they also made shifting points changes. At about 80,000 engine miles I had Pete replace the serpentine belt. Which included other needed similar related maintenance. Five years ago I bought New Stiffer Springs and Bilstein shocks from GoWesty. At the same time Pete replaced the Ball Joints, Control Arms and other suspension work was done. Also the Rack and Pinion steering was replaced Now this Improved Van is secure and easy to handle in the mountains with a heavy load for exciting Road Trips! I increased the original 14” wheels to 16” wheels and it now has amazing Goodyear Assurance all weather tires with only 6,000 miles! The purchase was with Americas Tire with road service and rotation included. I also have fitting Cable Radial Chains for the All Season tires. I improved the headlights with brighter bulbs. High and Low work fine. The lenses are Glass so they are clear. The Van has a 6 speaker Pioneer stereo with a remote control. Installed by GoWesty The upholstery is in good shape, the front seats were always covered. Sunshade always inside the windshield which is 2 years old. I switched the position of the front seats. Now the previous passenger seat is my driver seat! I have all of the Interior Curtains, and the Bug Screen for the Rear and a Bra for the front of the Van. The Smoked hatch is in great shape and works fine… maybe 6 years old. I do have the Retractable Awning which needs to be mounted. I take it off when I don’t use it. The interior water pump for the sink works fine, the gas stove top is in clean and the griddle top still has the original stick-on protector. I have the two Table Tops front and rear and the and posts. The Upper Canvas: One 6” tear seen in photos… easy to fix with two people and two irons! The upper bug screen is in fine condition and all of the zippers work well. The upper bed was rarely used… I usually removed the cushions to create more storage when the Top was Up for Camping. I’m 6’1”and it is easy to move around with the top is up.
