Harlem Children’s Zone (HCZ) — a world-renowned education and poverty-fighting organization based in New York — seeks an enthusiastic, dedicated, and mission-aligned Activity Specialists to join the West Side Community Center & the Geoffrey Candada Community Center. The Activity Specialist will bring a passion for the mission of Harlem Children’s Zone: break the cycle of intergenerational poverty with comprehensive, on-the-ground programming that builds up opportunities for children and families to thrive in school, work, and life. The West Side and Geoffrey Canaday Community Center are seeking Activity Specialists to lead specialty-based classes and workshops for adults while also serving as mentors and advocates. This role involves helping adults develop lifelong competencies, confidence, and community connection. As an Activity Specialist, you will facilitate weekly lesson plans, lead engaging activities, and support participants in navigating personal and professional growth. Requirements High School Diploma or Equivalent At least 2 years of experience teaching or mentoring adults in your specialty area Who You Are Skilled in knitting, sewing, painting, Zumba, dance, self-defense or computer literacy. Deep commitment to adult education and community empowerment Demonstrated expertise in the subject matter Strong interpersonal and communication skills Passion for equity, inclusion, and lifelong learning Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends Energetic, motivated self-starter and a team player Able to work independently and collaboratively with staff and participants Familiarity with Harlem’s cultural and social landscape Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus What You’ll Do Prepare and teach age-appropriate, skill-building curriculum in your specialty area Facilitate workshops and group discussions on personal development, leadership, and decision-making Support adult participants in identifying goals and accessing resources Coordinate guest speakers, community events, and enrichment activities Advocate for participant needs within WSCC and through partner organizations Maintain accurate records and contribute to program evaluation Attend weekly staff meetings and collaborate on program planning Act as a positive role model and trusted resource for adult learners Perform other duties as assigned Schedule Fall Schedule: Monday-Thursday, 6:00 PM–9:00 PM & Saturday, 10 am-4 pm Summer Schedule: Monday–Thursday, 4:00 PM–6:00 PM Benefits As a member of the HCZ team, you’ll join a supportive and inclusive community dedicated to helping children, families, and our staff thrive.
