Bookstore All Around Help (North Philly)
This is a part time/day labor position that I'm hoping to get someone who wants to transition to full time. You have to know something about used books for the job. There aren't many used bookstores around, so if you don't have employment history, you may have spent a lot of time in thrift stores or trash picking to put together a nice library for yourself. I don't know how people learn about this business nowadays. The heart of the business is getting large donations of books, and going through each box, and deciding what to do with each book-whether to keep it and how much to charge. I'm looking for something in the responses that would let me know someone would be familiar with this. There's also a lot of hard work...lifting heavy boxes, carrying books upstairs...there are three flights of stairs. You also have to work efficiently. Some people take all day to put away a box of books, and some people do it in 15 minutes. The store is half set up, so there is still a lot of shelving, organizing, and alphabetizing. The store is on a busy street in North Philly, and if you're not used to that type of neighborhood, you won't last. The people are generally respectful and friendly, but the last person quit when some kids ran in and threw books around. If you work in retail you know that kind of thing happens from time to time, like aggressive panhandlers. This is about as far away from a corporate job as you can get...and some people try to bring a corporate mentality to my stores when they come here. I don't want to sell on line. I don't want to spend a lot of time on social media, although I do tiktoks for the store sometimes. I don't want to be sucked into some huge tech monopoly. I figured out a way to escape that life...the only trouble is you don't get to live that cushy yuppie lifestyle. I don't get a chance to respond to a lot of answers to this ad. The process of finding someone to work here isn't easy and it's time consuming. I just mention that because some people have been calling or stopping by the store to see if I saw their resume.
