This set of 14 original postal covers features historical significance from World War II, specifically related to the USS Houston (CA-30) which was sunk in the Sunda Strait. The survivors of the Houston were transferred to the Japanese Prisoner of War (POW) camp where they were forced to build the infamous Bridge over the River Kwai. Many hundreds of sailors lost their lives in the construction to disease and torture by the Japanese soldiers. Perfect for collectors interested in correspondence from this time, these covers offer a glimpse into the history and events of World War II. Each naval cover was cancelled in the post office on board the USS Houston on the date it was stamped. Included is a period reproduction 8" x 10" black and white photo of the USS Houston with President Franklin D. Roosevelt aboard (his personal flag is being flown). This is a set of fourteen (14) original naval covers. I have owned them for many years and now it's time for someone else to own them. Eight of the postal covers featured PRESIDENT FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT as a guest on the cruise on the many trips on which he was transported to international conferences on the Houston rather than flying there.
