What to expect: As a Senior Quantum Scientist, you will be at the forefront of our research and development, taking a leading role in both experimental design and the architecture of future generations of hardware. You will be responsible for driving innovation in coherent control, calibration, and benchmarking at scale, with a particular focus on enabling ultra-low error rates and system reliability across larger trapped-ion devices. Beyond hands-on experiments, you will help shape technical direction, mentor junior scientists, and ensure our work translates into scalable, fault-tolerant systems. What you’ll be responsible for:  Leading the prototyping and characterisation of advanced coherent control schemes for trapped-ion qubits using laser and microwave fields. Driving system-level benchmarking and optimisation, ensuring near-term devices achieve world-leading performance and stability. Validating and integrating new trap technologies (e.g. on-chip electronics or photonics) to support scaling towards error-corrected architectures. Guiding junior scientists in experimental design, analysis, and presentation of results, while representing Oxford Ionics at external collaborations and conferences. Requirements You will need a PhD in physics or a closely related discipline, with a strong foundation in atomic or qubit-related physics and typically four or more years of post PhD experience in quantum control, either in academia or industry. Alongside deep technical expertise, you should be able to work independently, lead projects, and collaborate effectively within a small, fast-paced team. You will need: Proven expertise in experimental ion-trapping physics, ideally with a focus on quantum information processing and strong programming skills. Hands-on experience in spectroscopy, calibration, benchmarking of qubit systems, and debugging complex experimental setups. Strong proficiency with control software, hardware integration and data analysis. A track record of effective collaboration across teams and clear communication of complex scientific results through publications, talks, or conferences. The Company Surrozen is a biotechnology company pioneering targeted therapeutics that selectively activate the Wnt Pathway for tissue repair and regeneration.  Surrozen is focusing its Wnt biology expertise and Wnt signal modulation antibody technologies on its ophthalmology programs including development of new treatment options for retinopathies. The Company recently completed a private placement consisting of two tranches in aggregate up to $175 million in gross proceeds to fund multiple ophthalmology programs through initial Phase 1 safety, tolerability and efficacy studies. The Company expects to file an IND in 2026.   Modulation of Wnt signaling has the potential to be relevant in a broad range of highly prevalent eye diseases including “wet” and “dry” Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy, Fuchs’ endothelial corneal dystrophy (FECD), and non-infectious uveitis as well as certain rare eye diseases like retinitis pigmentosa, Stargardt’s and Familial Exudative Vitreoretinopathy (FEVR). The two lead candidates for the treatment of retinopathies include SZN-8141 (Fzd4/VEGF) and SZN-8143 (Fzd4/VEGF/IL-6).   SZN-8141 combines Frizzled 4 (Fzd4) agonism and Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) antagonism which has the potential to provide benefits over treatment with single agents for Diabetic Macular Edema (DME) and neovascular Age Related Macular Degeneration (wet AMD).    SZN-8143 combines Fzd4 agonism, VEGF antagonism, and interleukin-6 (IL-6) antagonism which may have benefits over single agents for treatment of DME/wet AMD/uveitic macular edema (UME).    Job Overview We are seeking a highly motivated Scientist, for a full-time position to support drug development programs in the ophthalmology space. The intent of the fellowship is to focus on high risk research: ambitious projects that may not produce results, but will have lasting impact if they work. We believe that publication in AI/ML has become overly biased towards short-term and iterative results, despite major gaps in our understanding of how to build optimal models. The goal of these fellowships is to give awardees uninterrupted time to focus on harder open problems, with adequate compute, talented peers, and weekly 1:1 mentorship from senior researchers but without chasing specific metrics. You will be expected to spend about 80% of your time on your own research, and up to 20% of your time either assisting other fellows or participating in wider research programs at IMI. We focus largely on applied research and its applications to online security problems, but often publish and support frontier research aligned with our broader interests. Serving hundreds of millions of people gives us a unique perspective as to what works at scale. Eligibility: prior fellows and research staff have come from disparate backgrounds, including early career researchers previously at MSR, FAIR, Mila, MPI, etc. and self taught mid career engineers transitioning into research.
