The Brunswick Ebony Brilliant Novelty billiard table, introduced around the mid-1880s, is a standout piece in the history of Brunswick billiards, reflecting the company’s commitment to craftsmanship, innovation, and aesthetic excellence during the High Victorian era. The Brilliant Novelty, launched around 1885, was marketed as a premium "home table" designed for private residences, clubs, and upscale venues. The table is renowned for its intricate inlay work and use of exotic woods, including ebony (a dense, polished black hardwood), California laurel, burl ash, French walnut, birds-eye maple, mahogany, rosewood, and tulipwood. These materials, often inlaid in vibrant, multi-colored patterns, gave the table a luxurious appearance, earning it a place in Brunswick’s “royal family” of billiard tables. Its walnut base with rosewood rails and detailed marquetry exemplified the era’s opulent aesthetic. The table was described in catalogs as having a finish where “age serves but to enhance its richness and beauty.” The Brilliant Novelty was designed to combine the best features of Brunswick’s earlier and contemporary tables, positioning it as a pinnacle of the company’s offerings. The Brilliant Novelty’s value lies in its rarity and craftsmanship, but its billiards focus limits its appeal compared to pocket pool tables. Target buyers who appreciate its historical and decorative value.
