Firefly provides an online learning space for students and teachers About the Role This is a full-time, staff level software engineering role where you will work as a technical lead and individual contributor on our Payments team. Payments is one of three product areas (along with Accounting and Student Billing) that are a part of our Financial Technology offering for our schools. The Payments product is focused on building and improving our online payments platform, VC Pay, as well as supporting our payment integrations with other products within Veracross. Accounting is used by schools to manage their general ledger and accounts payable/accounts receivable. Student Billing is used by schools to manage charges, payments, and statements for students and their families. Having an all-in-one integrated billing, accounting, and school information system improves the lives of school staff and families as it brings otherwise complex workflows into one streamlined systems. This role includes technical leadership and mentorship for other engineers on the team. Candidates with experience with integrating payment processors (domestic and international) are especially encouraged to apply. Our engineering team is remote-friendly, distributed, and has employees in a variety of states and contractors in several countries. While our headquarters is in Wakefield, MA and proximity to this location is a plus, candidates are encouraged to apply from anywhere. Responsabilities Develop, improve, and maintain features using Ruby on Rails, SQL, and JavaScript. Own technical architecture discussions and lead technical decisions for our payments product area. Provide technical mentorship for team members. Partner and collaborate with other technical leaders across teams. Build new features within our flagship product, Axiom. Enable other internal product areas, such as Admissions and Fundraising, to leverage our payments platform. Expand our internal tools to automate and improve workflows. Write and improve documentation for our FinTech systems and tools. Integrate Veracross with third-party systems used by private K-12 schools. Requirements Experience integrating payment providers such as Stripe, BlueSnap, Braintree, etc. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Excellent technical organization and planning skills. Demonstrable understanding of the security and privacy requirements of payment related systems. The ability to perform technical responsibilities remotely in a mostly asynchronous environment. The ability to be flexible and adaptable. 8+ years of professional programming experience. Proven experience in system architecture, ensuring system scalability and performance. Experience with the Ruby language, Rails framework, or similar languages and technologies; experience with modern JavaScript development a plus. Passionate about writing testable code, with experience in unit/integration testing. Experience with relational databases. Experience with source control, especially git. A service- and team-oriented mindset. Bonus Points We are specifically looking for candidates with previous FinTech experience. While experience integrating payment providers is required, the following experience is a big plus, but is not mandatory for a strong candidate: Understanding of core accounting standards and concepts, including but not limited to: GAAP, General Ledger, and Accounts Receivable / Accounts Payable. Experience with accounting applications, such as Quickbooks, Freshbooks, Xero, or Sage. Experience with financial aid, tuition management, or other school-related financial software. We are a large value driven VAR working with over 1000 clients in the US. Who I'm Looking For: Someone with ERP Experience with Order Entry, Quote Forms, Purchase Order, and Inventory Transactions. Programming in Visual Studio, using Blazor Forms, C#, Radzen, and SQL Stored Procedures. Full Stack Developer. This is because much of our platform will be looking at accounting data for AI to analyze. Being in business for 45 years we have much of the code written but need to expand and add new features. We currently are using components from Radzen. Ability to work with Visual Studio, Visual Code. We have 50 percent of the AI Chat Bot written. Mostly this is about forming SQL tables with memories, chat history, and other data. You should have some knowledge with Agents. We already have the connections on our chatbot to a local LLM which we are training using vectoring and advanced learning. We have API connections to Open Chat GPT. We are working on connections to Watson, and Grok. You need to know how to work with MS SQL Express and create tables. You should feel comfortable working with API, even if in a teaching environment. Most of the technology is changing so your ability to learn and grasp new ideas is the main feature we need, and of course be a good logical thinking person who can understand how objects work and put them together in working logical format Are you located in Massachusetts (Greater Boston, MetroWest, Worcester County, or similar). You’re comfortable sitting initially in our offices to work alongside other developers. Most employees are working local not remote. Working remote is possible with scrutiny. The First Project Milestone: Set up a secure Azure server Create a simple webpage. Upload a PDF (store it for future AI use) Create simple memory notes (simulated database entries) Connect the site to OpenAI (for basic chatbot testing) Authenticate with Open AI in Linux, close all ports, setup server and AI Send a prompt to Open AI Receive and Display the Answer from Open AI Write a Pytorch add-on to add pdf files to AI Model Add a text box for adding to memories of AI Model Create the database (MDB) or other, for storing this data, secure and encrypted.
