We provide a wide variety of IT services to small, medium, and enterprise clients in the Western United States. We’re a tight knit group who values teamwork and a casual work environment. We are actively seeking a qualified, dedicated Systems Engineer to join our team. *NOTE: This is an in-person local job in the PNW. We do NOT pay for relocation. JOB DESCRIPTION: This is a mid-level Systems Engineer position. The ideal candidate will work well alongside the other engineers and team members to manage and maintain our wide variety of clients in the US West coast. They will strive daily to ensure the highest and most secure levels of performance and availability and manage any problems as they arise. Responsibilities will include: Weekly travel within the Portland/Vancouver metro area as well as some weekend and overnight travel monthly throughout the West coast region. Daily tasks include communicating directly with clients and end users to assist in problem resolution, monitoring client networks for issues and alerts, resolving end users’ issues via chat, email, and phone support, proactively address and resolve issues as well as reactively address alerts. This job requires documentation of everything, so attention to detail and clear written communication is a must. Did we mention there will be travel? QUALIFICATIONS: • Bachelor’s degree in computer science; Experience and/or passed certifications may be substituted for education requirements. • Customer oriented • Approachable • Ability to multi-task • Strong written and oral communication skills • Works well in a team environment as well as independently • Excellent problem solving and troubleshooting ability • Maintain composure in stressful situations • Reliable transportation with Valid Driver’s License • Reliable for travel and on-call rotation • Must be able to stand and sit for long periods of time • Must be able to climb 3 flights of stairs • Must have the physical capability to climb ladders and access tight spaces • Must be able to lift 50 lbs. EXPERIENCE PREFERRED: Advanced Hardware knowledge: • Servers and Enterprise Hardware: Understanding of server infrastructure, advanced storage solutions, server hardware diagnostics, and system-level hardware troubleshooting. • Data Recovery: Expertise in recovering lost or corrupted data, including understanding backup strategies and tools like recovery software or disk utilities. • Advanced Networking: Strong knowledge of network configurations and protocols (e.g., IP addressing, DNS, VLANs, routing, switching, VPNs, and firewalls), with the ability to design, troubleshoot, and optimize network systems. • Peripheral Devices: Ability to troubleshoot and support specialized hardware like network-attached storage (NAS), printers, and multifunctional devices in complex environments. Advanced Software knowledge: • Operating Systems: Expert knowledge of multiple operating systems (Windows macOS, etc.). The ability to resolve issues like system crashes, configuration problems, or OS-level failures. • Server and Database Administration: Understanding of server management including Active Directory, Exchange, SQL Server, and web servers. • Software Development & Scripting: Proficiency in scripting languages to automate tasks, configure systems, and resolve recurring issues. • Cloud Platforms: Expertise with cloud-based environments such as AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud. Ability to manage cloud resources, troubleshoot integration issues, and optimize cloud performance. Security & Compliance Knowledge: • Advanced Security Practices: Expertise in security protocols, encryption, firewalls, security audits, vulnerability management, and incident response. • Cybersecurity Threats: Knowledge of how to identify and respond to cybersecurity threats such as malware, phishing attacks, and ransomware. • Compliance Standards: Familiarity with compliance regulations and ensuring systems and processes are compliant with legal and industry standards. TASK EXPECTATIONS: 1. Resolving Complex Technical Issues: • Advanced Troubleshooting: Handling complex, high-priority issues escalated from Tier 2, such as server or network failures, multi-layered software or hardware issues, and complicated system errors. • In-Depth Root Cause Analysis: Identifying the root causes of recurring issues and implementing permanent fixes to prevent future occurrences. This may involve writing scripts or developing automated solutions. • Escalation Point for Critical Issues: Acting as the final escalation point for all technical issues, ensuring resolution with minimal impact on the user or organization. 2. System Administration & Maintenance • Server & Network Management: Administering and maintaining critical IT systems such as servers, virtual machines, network infrastructure, and cloud platforms. Ensuring uptime, security, and performance. • Active Directory Management: Managing user accounts, groups, permissions, and group policies within Active Directory, ensuring proper configuration and security of user access to systems. • Software & System Patching: Applying software updates, patches, and service packs to keep systems secure and functioning efficiently. Monitoring for vulnerabilities and applying critical patches when necessary. • Disaster Recovery & Backup Management: Overseeing disaster recovery systems and procedures, ensuring that backups are completed regularly and testing recovery processes to ensure business continuity. 3. Mentoring and Training: • Mentorship: Offering guidance and mentorship to Tier 1 and Tier 2 engineers, helping them solve complex problems and providing advice on troubleshooting techniques and best practices. • Internal Knowledge Sharing: Contributing to internal documentation, knowledge bases, and best practices guides to share technical expertise and solutions with the broader IT team. 4. Security and Compliance Management: • Security Monitoring: Continuously monitoring systems for potential security threats and taking corrective actions to protect data and infrastructure. • Incident Response: Managing and responding to security incidents, including investigating potential breaches, isolating affected systems, and implementing measures to prevent further risks. • Compliance Audits: Ensuring systems adhere to regulatory and industry standards for data protection, security, and privacy. Supporting internal or external audits as needed. Successful completion of a background check is required.
