IF AD IS UP, IT’S STILL AVAILABLE PLEASE READ ENTIRE POST CAREFULLY BEFORE RESPONDING. Mahalo. I am renting my lovely, very peaceful and private 3-bed 2-bath historic home on ¼ acre in Volcano Village. It’s in a private neighborhood at the end of a dead-end road and surrounded by endemic forest. It is pin-drop quiet here; the residents are mostly retired kūpuna, professionals, and artists. This place is a very special sanctuary, and I’m looking for someone who wants to rent long term and will care for it lovingly. I live in it right now, so the photos have some of my belongings in them; those will of course be gone when you move in. Sorry, no Section 8 vouchers. It is perfect for retired folks, work-from-home, park employees, or professionals in the conservation arena. Preference will be given to displaced Hawaiʻi-born folks, including those in the U.S. who wish to return to the Islands. There are no fire ants and not many coqui frogs. There are several fruit trees, strawberries, an herb garden, large yard, Japanese gardens, a pond, and loads of storage space. It has a basement and a 1-car carport, new washer and dryer, dishwasher, and stained glass throughout. There is a Japanese furo in the basement (not wood fired). It has a remodeled chef’s kitchen with solid koa wood cabinetry, a 30 cf refrigerator, and a 5-burner propane range with convection oven. There is a large back lanai with a forest view that is wonderful for watching our endemic birds. It is partially furnished. Yard service is included. You MUST be familiar with the Volcano area, as the property is 30 miles from Hilo and situated at a cool 4000’ in elevation. You have to want to live up here. It is a 2-mile walk or 5-minute drive to Volcanoes National Park. Preferably you are from here or have been on Big Island for a long while and intend to stay. This is not a “plug and play” home. There is no home mail delivery or rubbish pickup; you must get a free P.O. box and bring rubbish to the transfer station. The home has on-grid electric; the tankless hot water, range, and clothes dryer are propane. There are large propane tanks that are picked up by Village Propane, filled, and delivered back – you don’t have to fill them yourself. You MUST be familiar with rainwater catchment. The primary heat source is a wood-burning stove–something you must be familiar with or you won’t make it here. Firewood can be delivered, though you must split your own kindling. You are welcome to have garden here. One or two cats are welcome if they are fixed and vaccinated, pet deposit required. No dogs, no exceptions. I am looking for a conscious person(s) who will be gentle with the house: no door and cabinet slammers, no yanking hard on towel bars, and so on. Treat it like your grandmother. You must be very clean and quiet. No smoking, alcoholism or drug use of any kind, including weed. You must be aware and respectful of neighbors: no loud music/TV, no big parties, no loud vehicles or speeding down our quiet gravel lanes. Though everything is in good working order, you MUST have basic home maintenance skills. Having fix-it skills and your own tools is a plus! Tenant selection is by application and there will be a background check. If the above sounds like you and your lifestyle, please tell me about yourself and why you think you would be a good fit and I will send you an application and set up a showing. You must be able to come look at it in person. Mahalo for your interest.
