Description

Have you ever went to look at a car that was advertised as being in EXCELLENT or even VERY GOOD CONDITION only to find out that when you came to look over the car it was grossly misrepresented? Believe me when I tell you that from many personal experiences I understand. I am a retired 36+ year Space Shuttle Mechanical Engineer, an A&P Aircraft Mechanic and a very picky detail oriented automobile enthusiast who loves to buy, work on, study, experience and enhance automotive designs. I have been doing this since I was 15 years old so needless to say I’ve gone through “A LOT” of cars. As an Engineer/Mechanic when I look over a car for purchase I am primarily focused on two things, its overall mechanical condition and its pedigree. I want to be assured that the car has had a very good maintenance history because my experience has shown me that if I buy a car with a good foundation it will continue to be reliable and it also makes it much easier for me to restore or make the car better. I place a lot of value in the overall condition of any car that I purchase. About the history of the 1974 Type 181 VW THING that I have for sale: This car was purchased new in 1975 from a gentleman in Orlando who owned it up until 2009 when he sold it to an aviation enthusiast where it was stored in an aircraft hangar in South Carolina and more than likely driven around the flight line like a golf cart. The third owner also lived in South Carolina and purchased the car in 2019 and owned it for about two years. The car has always been stored inside when not in use and only has 64K original miles. Mechanical inspections and repairs/enhancements that I performed: When I first got the car home I lifted the car up, pulled all the wheels and brake drums and inspected every inch of the undercarriage. I was pleasantly surprised and truly amazed at how clean and rust free the undercarriage was. All the brake drums were in great condition. I replaced all the original hydraulic wheel cylinders, the master cylinder and all the brake pads. All 5 tires to include the spare are new and they were all road force balanced. Before the new tires were mounted I also painted the rims with the original period correct matching gray color. The steel chrome original hubcaps are in great condition. I replaced the original transmission shift rod bushings which dramatically tightened up the sloppy shift lever. BTW, the transmission shifts great with absolutely no grinding during down-shifting or up-shifting. I installed the period correct original replacement rubber floor mats in the front and rear of the car. I also installed the period correct original front and rear rubber bumpers that were required on all those THINGS that were sold in the USA. …………… AND believe it or not I actually got the original “Spare Tire Operated” pneumatic windshield washer to work! The water that sprays onto the windshield is actually operated from a spare tire pressurized washer fluid tank under the hood. Under the hood is also the original single point mechanical jack and as designed it will lift up the entire right or left side of the car. Like most VW 1600 engines I noticed a small amount of oil leakage on the ground when I parked the car so I decided to pull the engine and transmission to remedy the situation. I replaced every engine seal and adjusted the valves but decided to leave the original clutch and pressure plate alone because the car only has 64K miles and the clutch was hardly worn. While I had the engine out I installed new engine bay front and rear seals, pulled apart both CV Axles and replaced them and installed new rubber shaft boots. I had read that the socket head cap-screws that attach each side of the axles had a tendency to come loose so as any good aircraft mechanic would do I drilled all the socket head cap-screws and safety wired them so they cannot come loose. I installed new Gabriel Shocks all the way around. When I purchased the car it had a VW Bug “pea shooter” exhaust system which I really didn't care for. I wanted to safely increase the engines ability to “breath” so I decided to install a USA made ceramic powder coated custom header/muffler that was made just for the VW THING. I also installed a small simple paper element carburetor air filter. There was a noticeable difference in the performance when I took the THING out for its first test drive, much better low and top end performance and a much smoother ride and higher speeds. Once I opened up the exhaust I decided I would try to also open up the engines intake. I installed an electric fuel pump and duel carburetors, what a dramatic difference it made! The attached engine bay photo and YouTube videos listed below show the engine with the single carburetor that I will provide with the sale in case you want to convert back to the original. BTW, The VW forums claim that the duel carbs add 10 HP to the engine. The last thing I did was to install a complete PerTronix Electronic Ignition System to include their Distributor Cap, Rotor, Coil and Plug Wires. The Top is like new and the metal top skeleton rods were all powder coated before the new top was installed. The battery is also new and I installed a new AM/FM digital radio with 4 speakers and also a 12 volt power Supply Socket in the dash. As far as I can tell the car has never been in any kind of an accident and the paint is actually original! You will not be disappointed if you come see this car as it is truly in VERY GOOD CONDITION for the year that it was made and I truly believe that it has had a very good mechanical foundational history.
