If you purchase after May in Southwest Virginia, you will just need buy a larger colony than the typical early spring five frame nuc. I am an all natural beekeeper who sells all sizes of healthy queen right colonies (she’ll be marked so you can easily find her). My apiary always receives a certificate of health from the Commonwealth of Virginia. Almost all my colonies survive the winter. I selectively breed for friendly demeanor, varroa resistance, and vigor. I can offer just about any size you can imagine, from small five frame nucs, typically purchased in early spring, or add any number of additional frames of bees and resources if you purchase later in the season, to get the colony large enough to survive your winter. Price of course varies based on how big you want to go. In addition to locals, I have customers come from NC, KY, TN and WV to get bees from me. Many repeat customers.
