The Silicon Valley Bicycle Exchange is looking for an experienced head mechanic who can tackle more advanced jobs like brake bleeds and suspension servicing (forks and shocks) balanced with strong knowledge of component compatibility. Bring your enthusiasm and experience and feel good contributing to a worthy cause all at the same time. Along with wrenching on bikes, you will also interact with our volunteers. You will join a team in a rewarding and fulfilling position. We receive bikes of all kinds and from many different time periods. Unlike a commercial bike shop that sells only new bikes, we receive interesting bikes and parts spanning many decades of cycling history and all categories of bikes (road bikes, mountain bikes, hybrids, cross/gravel, kid’s bikes and more). Key Responsibilities: Execute successful repairs independently to the satisfaction of BikeX QA standards. Communicate with customers in person regarding the status of their bicycle repair. Complete daily tasks as assigned within prescribed timelines while communicating any exceptions to the shop manager. Maintain tools and bench areas on a daily basis according to BikeX standards. Become familiar with BikeX’s' safety protocols. Wear safety equipment as required when using the grinder,air compressor, drills, power tools etc. Learn and follow safety procedures when utilizing degreasers, lubricants and ultrasonic parts cleaner. Learn and follow proper disposal of materials (recycle, compost, trash). Be a team player who collaborates with our small staff and dozens of volunteers to maintain a clean and organized workspace, share bike maintenance knowledge and tips, and assist with inventory management and parts ordering. Requirements Good communication skills and independent problem-solving skills Detail-oriented Ability to lift 30 lbs overhead and 50 lbs to shoulder height Ability to stand at a bike repair stand for an entire 8-hour work shift Ability to use hand tools with repetitive motions, including twisting, pushing and pulling Possess excellent problem-solving skills Must be able to lift 15-35 lb bikes while standing on a ladder, and descend the ladder with bike in hand Must be able to communicate with customers in person, via email and over the phone Knowledge of vintage bikes and parts is a plus, but not a requirement Has high ethical standards, is committed to transparency and honesty and is ready to thrive in a dynamic team environment What We Offer ● Competitive pay: $25.00 - $35.00 per hour, depending on experience. ● Meaningful work: Make a real impact in your community while doing what you love. ● Supportive environment: Join a team that values your growth and celebrates your contributions. ● Growth opportunities: Help play a big role in a small org.
