1972 Mercedes Benz 350SL 4.5 (R107 450SL) - $16,500 (West Covina)

Description

1972 350SL 4.5 in 462H Tunis Beige. Car is mechanically sorted with a recent valve job (guides and seals), original transmission rebuild in 2021, and a plethora of various D-jetronic components to make it run properly. Per mechanic, timing chain has no slack and thus is not in need of new tensioner or guides, however, I do not have any records prior to my taking ownership in 2017. Cosmetically, the car is very presentable, but approximately two years ago I was faced with some peeling clear-coat which I was convinced could be re-applied without a total repaint. The result was sub-par and various areas with small dings and scratches were touched up in an obvious way. Interior is very nice—I had the seats re-covered in a custom pattern using 560SL seat backs, new burlwood trim, and later 3-point belts installed. I still have all the original interior fitments, including the old seat backs and two-part belts, and these will be included. One crack in the dash that is not obvious to either driver or passenger whilst seated in the car. Original Becker radio is also present. Car has European-style headlights and 16” Penta/Ronal wheels. Left front fender was replaced at some point in the very distant past. I am the third owner since 2017, and the previous one owned it since 1987. There are no records from the second owner, but I have all records since I have owned it, and all work has been done at a Mercedes specialist with more than 40 years’ experience. The car has its hardtop, but has been taken off to air out the soft top, which needs to be replaced. A replacement German new old stock canvas top in black will be included. The door and window seals should be replaced. The air conditioner does not blow cold air, and I am awaiting an appointment with my mechanic to address it—the diagnosis is unknown at this point. The paint is presentable, but again the work I had done on it was not to expectation, with much of the touch-up work extending far beyond the affected areas (small imperfections, door dings, and an area where the previous owner dropped the hardtop on the trunk lid). The right door moulding was loose for some time and I replaced the plastic grommets in the door to address that, but it doesn’t hold at all now. This will also be addressed before sale. All service history since 2017–and done exclusively by a very respected local Mercedes specialist—present with the car including but not limited to: water pump, replacement of fuel lines and hoses, replacement of numerous D-Jetronic components (various regulators, valves, and modules), original transmission rebuild less than 10,000 miles ago (2021), and a complete valve guide and seal job (2023). Bought a later model Euro 300SL and have no need for two 107s. Car has been driven frequently since the first posting of this ad and is now at 134,000 (June 2025). Will continue to accrue miles at a rate of 100-500 miles per week until sold. May consider full or partial trades for antique violins and orchestral string instruments, antique keyboard instruments (fortepianos, harpsichords), gold and silver coins (metal value).
