The Madeira School is seeking a full-time Stable Hand to join its Riding Department. The facility, located in McLean, VA, supports a year-round comprehensive riding program, including approximately 30 school owned and boarder horses. This position will include weekday and weekend hours depending upon the needs of the school and will be scheduled as follows: 5:00 am – 1:00 pm Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. Note: Housing is NOT provided. Responsibilities include: turning horses out, bringing horses in; feeding hay and grain; maintaining clean and plentiful water sources; cleaning stalls; changing blankets according to temperature; assisting in basic horse health care, both routine and exceptional (e.g., identifying likenesses, colic, tying up, basic first aid); assisting in general care of horses, including grooming, clipping, mane pulling and daily hoof care; keep stables tidy and organized; assists in other stable and barn chores as needed, including sweeping, raking, picking stalls. Requirements: recognize, assess, treat and monitor a variety of equine injuries; reliable, team player who is able to communicate well; safety-oriented individual; authorized to work in the United States for any employer; physical requirements: several hours of standing, kneeling, bending, climbing stairs, climbing ladders & walking; lifting and carrying 50 pounds, push/pull animals of 900 pounds or more; exposure to hot/cold, wet/humid weather conditions.
