They are non-binary so respecting their pronouns is important, but they understand it takes time when getting to know someone new. They can be quiet and keep to themselves but engage in conversations when they want to; they have alone time to relax and do the things they enjoy. Feeling supported, positive reinforcement, and acknowledgment when they are doing well is important.
