This role will oversee a multidisciplinary team of engineers and external partners, ensuring that our wearable devices are powered by safe, reliable, and high-performance battery systems. You will define the long-term technology roadmap, manage global supplier relationships, and build a world-class engineering function that supports Oura’s next-generation products. This is a hybrid role in our  San Francisco office. What You’ll Do Team & Leadership Build, lead, and mentor a high-performing team of engineers, fostering technical excellence and innovation. Define the organization’s priorities, processes, and best practices for battery development and validation. Develop talent and cultivate an inclusive, collaborative engineering culture. Technology Strategy & Roadmap Own Oura’s battery technology roadmap, aligning it with product, design, and business strategies. Evaluate and drive adoption of emerging chemistries, packaging methods, and charging innovations. Guide long-term architecture decisions by anticipating future product needs and technology constraints. Cross-Functional & Executive Collaboration Partner closely with executives, product management, design, and hardware leadership to ensure battery solutions meet user experience goals and business requirements. Ensure cross-functional support from mechanical, electronics, and firmware/algorithm teams, recognizing that battery performance is the result of system-level design decisions. Influence product trade-offs by providing technical, safety, and manufacturability perspectives at the leadership level. Communicate progress, risks, and opportunities to senior leadership and cross-functional stakeholders. Vendor & Supply Chain Engagement Build strategic relationships with global battery suppliers, focusing on quality, reliability, cost, and scalability. Oversee qualification processes and ensure supply chain resilience for high-volume production. Represent Oura in negotiations and technical partnerships with leading battery vendors and research institutions. Technical Oversight Provide technical guidance on battery safety, testing standards, and integration approaches. Ensure Oura sets industry benchmarks for battery reliability, lifetime performance, and user safety. Drive resolution of complex technical issues, guiding teams through root cause analysis and long-term corrective actions. Requirements Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related field. 12+ years of experience in battery engineering for consumer electronics or high-volume devices, with at least 5 years in leadership roles. Proven success building and scaling battery teams, with demonstrated people management experience. Deep knowledge of Li-ion and emerging chemistries, cell design, and packaging innovations. Strong experience with battery safety, transportation and environmental certifications and navigating technical requirements for various product architectures Strong background in supplier engagement and Asia-based vendor ecosystems. Track record of defining and executing battery technology roadmaps. Excellent communication skills, with the ability to influence executive decision-making and build trust across global teams.
