Edutopia, the influential publisher of videos and feature stories about what works in education, is looking for an Assistant Editor. This is an opportunity to join a passionate editorial team writing and reporting about transformative, positive change in pre-K to 12 education. The position provides real-time training and experience in reporting, research, writing, social media, and video and multimedia production, while learning the ins and outs of the pre-K to 12 education beat. The Assistant Editor will join our remote team as they research and craft new story ideas, report from innovative schools that are pioneering new models of learning, line up crucial interviews with education influencers, and produce stories in a wide variety of formats on deadline. Primary Responsibilities Write stories, scripts, and other narrative forms ranging from feature articles, research summaries, and social media posts Assist editors as they research and craft new story ideas, plan the editorial calendar, and produce features and multimedia content  Develop expertise in the K-12 education beat, with a particular focus on teaching and learning Code content in our content management system  Pitch original, relevant, compelling story ideas across various channels Develop reporting plans and conduct interviews, in person or remotely, as needed Provide feedback on incoming pitches Other editorial duties as assigned Requirements Education/Experience Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field At least 1–2 years of journalistic writing experience in digital media at a job, internship, or university, or a master’s degree in journalism Required Editorial Skills/Competencies Strong writing, research, reporting, and presentation skills A knack for writing and crafting content for the web and social media spaces Creative editorial thinking and a willingness to explore new storytelling formats and knowledge-creation tools, including generative AI Impeccable attention to detail, and devotion to accuracy Ability to organize and manage multiple projects at one time Initiative and resourcefulness Ability to collaborate with colleagues across departments Ability to organize, analyze, and synthesize information from many different sources Discipline to consistently deliver projects on time and to agreed-upon plan A passion and commitment to the Edutopia mission and spirit of telling stories about what works in education To Apply Please submit a resume, cover letter, and three clips of your work (links are preferable) by September 26, 2025. Benefits The Assistant Editor position is a full-time position based remotely anywhere in the United States.  The full-time salary range is between $55,000 and $75,000, with the exact salary depending on experience and geographic location. Edutopia is part of the George Lucas Educational Foundation, which offers comprehensive health, vision, and dental insurance; an employer match of up to 6% of salary for your retirement fund, vested immediately; and an annual education stipend to spend on professional development. Work Environment and Requirements This is a remote position based in the United States, requiring a dedicated home office workspace with reliable high-speed internet and standard office equipment. For tax and compliance purposes, employees must maintain a primary residence and work location in a single U.S. state. The position requires effective coordination with remote team members across time zones. Mandatory travel is required for periodic team gatherings and organizational meetings, plus other occasional domestic travel up to 10-15%. The position requires prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Eligibility Requirements This position is open only to individuals legally authorized to work in the United States who will be W-2 employees.
