Sous Chef Role FOLK is a new cocktail bar opening this fall from the team behind LORE, led by Executive Chef and Bib Gourmand honoree Jay Kumar. With a balance of neighborhood warmth and refined hospitality, FOLK celebrates the people who shape the community and make New York City extraordinary. We’re seeking a passionate and driven Sous Chef to join our leadership team as we prepare to open FOLK. The ideal candidate brings genuine enthusiasm for food, hospitality, and teamwork. As a key member of our culinary team, the Sous Chef will embody positivity, creativity, and adaptability. This is an exciting opportunity to join a seasoned, diverse, and dynamic group dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment where everyone can learn, collaborate, and grow. **What We're Looking For** - Natural leader and collaborator who inspires through teaching, guidance, and clear communication; works closely with the Chef de Cuisine to execute dishes and develop menus. - Previous modern and fine dining experience - Genuine curiosity and appreciation for international cuisine and culture. - Strong technical foundation across stations — emphasis on small plates, plating, etc. — with the ability to execute and train consistently. - Calm and dependable under pressure, maintaining high standards of consistency, quality, and morale in a fast-paced kitchen. - Grounded in humility, empathy, and accountability — someone who owns mistakes, learns from them, and models a positive, team-first culture. - Operationally sharp — attentive to food cost, waste, and efficiency; supports inventory management and sustainable kitchen practices. - Reliable and committed, with weekend (Saturday + Sunday) availability. - Committed to cleanliness, safety, and compliance with DOH standards, ensuring a safe and healthy workplace. **Requirements** - 5+ years of kitchen experience, including 3+ years in leadership or advanced line cook roles - Prior experience in modern or fine dining restaurants - Deep understanding of spice, flavor balance, and innovation with global-inspired ingredients - Excellent knife skills, plating techniques, and attention to detail - NYC Food Handler Certificate (ServSafe a plus) - Familiarity with NYC DOH regulations and kitchen safety standards - Ability to manage prep lists, inventory, and ordering systems efficiently - Strong communication and mentoring skills within a team setting - Ability to lift 30+ lbs and stand for extended periods (up to 10-hour shifts) - Availability for nights, weekends, and holidays as needed **What We Offer** - Competitive Wages - Opportunities for professional development, continued education and trainings - Equitable work environment to ensure a healthy balance These positions are full-time and require evening and weekend availability.
