Description

What makes the Hammond tonewheel organ one of the most beloved instruments in music history? From the smoky jazz clubs to the grand stages of rock, gospel, and blues, the Hammond has ruled them all. Musicians adore these beasts so much they’ll lug hundreds of pounds of tonewheel glory to gigs, just to capture that unmistakable sound. But what gives the Hammond its magic? What’s behind that legendary growl and shimmer? Why do terms like percussion, tonewheel, drawbar, and key click send organ fans into a frenzy? On Monday, September 16 at 7:30 PM, step inside the new MUSEUM OF MUSIC TECHNOLOGY for an intimate, hands-on workshop that dives deep into the secrets of the Hammond—what makes it tick, why it still reigns supreme and how its sound shaped entire genres. And here’s the kicker: you won’t just learn about Hammonds, you’ll see history in the flesh. Standing before you will be Rick Wakeman’s chopped C-3 that ripped the solo in the song “Roundabout” by his band, YES. Keith Emerson’s actual Hammonds from Tarkus and Pictures at an Exhibition, plus his touring rig from his band The Best and the notorious dagger-pierced L-100 that redefined rock theatrics. This rare event is only $50 and limited to just 16 participants—so lock in your spot now. Parking is free and abundant. The Museum of Music Technology is located at 45 Mainland Road, Harleysville, PA 19438. Questions? Email show contact info . Don’t miss this unique experience, because there’s nothing quite like a Hammond. ;)
