R&D Machinist (Ballard)
Position summary: This role is more than a rank-and-file machinist or a “just make this part” machinist. It is an “R&D machinist” with a designer’s mind, who is a problem solver, conceptual thinker, and who is eager to figure it out, through individual effort as well as in collaboration with the team. This position will be largely centered around programming and machining custom parts in one-off or small batch quantity, which may need redesign or rework as the project progresses. Medium-sized, production-style machining projects may also be required. Most parts are designed from scratch by in-house designers, and this position will require fluency with CAD software (Solidworks), not just CAM, as it is expected that machinists can conceptualize and draw a design in CAD, not just carry out the steps to machine it. Essential Responsibilities: Run CNC equipment (and manual machines as necessary) in production and prototyping capacities Run multiple machines simultaneously as required Check and monitor parts being run; maintain attention to detail in every aspect of the project Program parts using Fusion 360 and HSM Works Have proficiency with Solidworks design software Create, interpret and revise manufacturing drawings Perform typical post-production such as deburring, polishing, etc. Perform QC and dimensional verification to ensure standards are met Perform daily and periodic maintenance on machines (fluid levels, chip clearing, etc.) Be accountable and on time; maintain clean and orderly workspace Work as a team member and maintain a scrutinous eye for ways that a part or a project could be improved (this is not simply button pushing or "turn off your brain" machining) At times between machining projects, contribute to the R&D effort through CAD work or collaborative problem solving with other members of the design and manufacturing team as required Education and Experience: Trade school for machining practices or equivalent experience Proficiency in basic math required for programming and machining Design experience in the form of product development or engineering, etc. Examples of personal projects and/or creative exploration and self-education are preferred Metal fabrication and general shop work experience preferred Proficiency in CAM programming in HSM Works/Fusion 360, including advanced techniques like multi-axis and 3D toolpaths. Nice to have: Existing familiarity with HAAS/PROTOTRAK/TRAK mills and lathes Experience in an ISO / ITAR setting Experience with a Quality Management System (QMS) Experience operating a CMM Physical Requirements: Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time Operate in a shop environment that is frequently noisy Wear proper PPE as required by task Lift or move approximately 10-50 lbs regularly Operate small forklift or pallet jack Occasionally assist team members in other projects throughout the shop, like relocating equipment, etc. Use hand and power tools (with wood and metal) in a basic or “homeowner” capacity at a minimum Compensation/benefits: Flexible work schedule including opportunities for occasional remote work After-hours access to the R&D Shop for personal projects Comprehensive benefits program including subsidized medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees Eligible for Overtime Pay Company 401(k) plan 14 days of PTO (7 sick days and 7 vacation days) 8 paid Holidays We are ultimately seeking talented individuals with a wide range of experience and abilities. Prospective applicants whose work experience is more firmly rooted on the design/engineering side but still have strong abilities in machining and programming are encouraged to apply. This job description is not exhaustive and the position may include additional responsibilities and expectations not listed here. This job posting is not an employment contract, and employees of this company are employed on an “at will” basis and may be terminated at any time.
