Description

Are you a tutor with at least two years of professional teaching or tutoring experience? In-person positions available at $45-$50 an hour. This position will be a good fit for you if … 1. You love literature and poetry. Here is a comment from a tutor with a Ph.D. who has been with the company for over a decade: “I do not have the luxury of teaching either literature or poetry at my full-time job. I love sharing the beauty of language and the significance of meaning that can be different depending when you read something. What was powerful at 16 is still powerful now but in a completely different way. I love to introduce students to beloved characters so that they can experience Anne's, Dorothy's, Tom's, and Jim's problems and joys. I like to explain what is going on historically so that the students understand the context of the literature and don't assume that life has always been as we know it today.” 2. You love kids—at least for a hour at a time. :) Our kids stay in our program for a long time and are typically on their best behavior. You don't have to deal with tantrums or tears. 3. You love grammar. You love the rules and the exceptions. You want to foster an appreciation of it. Here’s what current tutors say about working for Improve Your English: 1. “The company cares about employees and clients. The company does not treat everyone as interchangeable or as a stereotype. The owner respects all of us. The company is serious about safety of clients and employees.” 2. “I like that the company uses a proprietary curriculum. The curriculum is well thought out. The owner, who created the curriculum, is a Stanford graduate. He takes suggestions and is willing to let the tutors be somewhat independent based on their own strengths and the needs of the individual student. Also, our curriculum changes and improves over time.” Another tutor comment: “I can come up with my own exercises and questions or I can rely on IYE's. If I was a new tutor, I could simply start. I would not have to spend hours looking for vocabulary, grammar, and reading comprehension exercises or texts. IYE provides them.” 4. The work is part time or full time. A comment from one of the current-tutors: “I can work more or less if and when I want. Also, it is something I can do once I retire from my full-time job. I can also teach in person or online. I can fit the work into my schedule.” 5. The job pays well. A case study: “I teach at Improve Your English, on average, 11 hours a week during the school year. These hours, plus more during the summer and over winter break, account for a third of my income. This fact always astonishes my friends at a local university who ask why I do something so low as tutoring. This extra money allows me to live a middle-class lifestyle. I can buy a car, go on vacation, and go out to eat without too much hardship.” Does this sound interesting? Great! Here’s the position we have for you: a tutor of advanced English skills to native speakers in grades 5-12. Available tutoring hours are 3pm-9pm weekdays, 9am-9pm Saturdays and Sundays. We are looking for people who can work 8-10 hours a week and commit for at least a year. You will receive extensive training and preparation, all of which is paid. Our company curriculum is based on classic literature, traditional grammar, and regular essay writing. Pay: $45 an hour, $50 if you have a PhD. (And you are paid for your lesson slot even if your student skips the lesson.) Positions include - Option of up to $300 a month towards medical benefits with Kaiser - 401K program - Paid sick days - Time off for major holidays - Personal days per CA law Responsibilities - Advanced 1-1 tutoring in English, working primarily with students in grades 5-12, using our company curriculum. Requirements - At least two years of professional English teaching experience - Strong knowledge of English grammar, vocabulary, and literature - BA in English Literature (We will consider degrees in other fields if you have a strong interest in literature. Here's a good test of interest in literature: How much do you love reading and viewing Shakespeare, talking about classic authors with others, recalling powerful moments from poems, and so forth?) - Ability to work either Saturday or Sunday, plus your choice of afternoons and evenings Monday-Friday - Comfort with using modern technology like videoconferencing software and Google docs - Ability to connect with and inspire kids - Strong oral and written communication skills We will consider applicants who wish to teach online; however, we will prioritize applicants who can teach in person from our office in Cupertino. All tutors must pass standard background checks and government fingerprinting. Candidates will go through an evaluation process to test their knowledge of English vocabulary and grammar, ability to write an essay, and ability to teach kids. Wondering if you are a good fit? We find that successful job applicants can comfortably define, without using a dictionary, at least eight of the following ten vocabulary words: primordial, vicarious experience, antagonist, assailant, reproof, cunning, introspective, incarnation, belligerent, gaunt. If you're interested, please send your resume and cover letter using the Craigslist relay email. Begin your letter with the word “peach,” and write about why the position would be good for you. Again, we will prioritize applicants that can teach in-person at our office in Cupertino.
