Position Summary: The mission of Pierce College is to create quality educational opportunities to a diverse community of learners to thrive in an evolving world. Working under general supervision, the Makerspace Specialist will plan, organize, direct, and coordinate operations of the Fab Lab, providing a space that will be safe and welcoming for all students. The Makerspace Specialist will employ their creativity and intellectual curiosity to develop novel uses of resources to inspire and support student success. The Makerspace Specialist will oversee the District Makerspaces, including the Fabrication Laboratory (FabLab) and Ideation Studio, and Fort Steilacoom Makerspace, spaces designed to encourage and facilitate the practical application of STEAM principles in student’s everyday life. The FabLab is equipped with state-of-the-art technology oriented around STEAM principles and DIY skill building. The Ideation Studio is a versatile space envisioned as a comfortable and well equipped ‘third place’ for students to gather for study, brainstorming, social events, and leisure activities. The Fort Steilacoom Makerspace is a well-equipped satellite Makerspace that extends Makerspaces services across the district. Support implementation of fresh new strategies as it relates to student technology. * District collaboration within the department, including but not limited to; budgeting, scheduling and event planning. Technical Expertise * Oversee the use, maintenance and troubleshooting of Makerspace equipment (e.g., 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC machines), ensuring safe and efficient operation. * Demonstrate expertise with Microsoft suite applications, with an emphasis on Teams and Excel. * Demonstrate technical knowledge of equipment and the ability to quickly learn new design applications, practical techniques and creative processes. * Demonstrate knowledge of employer responsibilities to provide a safe and healthy workplace. To include but not limited to: Hazard recognition and mitigation, safety regulations, emergency plans, Personal Protective Equipment, hazardous materials, hazard communication, and materials handling. * Coordinate with campus IT to ensure timely installation and maintenance of software, drivers, security patches, and feature updates on Makerspace-related technology; oversee the upkeep of computing systems by facilitating necessary support requests and tracking issue resolution. Training and Supervision * Onboard, train and supervise student staff in department policy and function. * Promote work opportunities for students that align with their academic and career goals, while increasing diverse representation within the program. * Participate in the hiring process for student workers, including reviewing applications, assisting interviewing, recommend hiring, and facilitating departmental on-boarding of new hires. * Direct work priorities and practices of student staff. * Coordinate and facilitate team meetings promoting collaboration, inclusion, and community. Community Engagement * Actively engage with community groups and educational partners to develop projects that meet local needs, enhancing the visibility and impact of the FabLab. * Ensure best practices in delivery of services, emphasizing the importance of empowering experiences that inspire student growth and potential. * Represent the Fab Lab and Pierce College with professionalism when engaged in outreach efforts with external stakeholders. Program Oversight * Oversee the day-to-day operations of the FabLab, including scheduling, budgeting recommendations, and identifying needed materials and equipment. * Maintain tracking programs that gather statistical data regarding program utilization. * Collaborate with Program Manager and other Program Specialist(s) to assess data and project future program growth in response to the stated needs of students. * Assist Program Manager to support Canvas page, scheduling systems, program planning. * Collaborate with District Health and Safety Specialist to develop and implement the Makerspace safety plan and to ensure compliance with a variety of applicable safety programs. Train and supervise student staff and students in the safe and effective use of FabLab resources, promoting a culture of learning and innovation. * Represent the Fab Lab on divisional and college-wide committees. * Other duties as assigned Required Education: * Associate's degree from an accredited college or university or equivalent work experience in a makerspace lab, fabrication lab, or related technical, educational, or creative environment. Education to experience equivalences are as follows; Associates Degree = 2 years | Bachelors Degree = 4 years | Masters Degree = 5 years Required Experience: * Leadership experience in a diverse environment. * Hands on technical proficiency with any of the following. laser engravers, 3d printers, fiber arts material, vinyl cutters, etc, and related software * Proficiency in Microsoft Suite, digital workplace and collaboration tools.
