Position Duties & Responsibilities
The Grounds Manager will have responsibility for managing and implementing all aspects of the Bushnell University grounds program. A beautiful campus is not only aesthetically satisfying but also is recognized as an essential element in outreach, recruitment and retention of staff and students at this university. It plays a significant role in marketing and branding for the institution. This position requires complex management skills, technical knowledge, physical labor, and a strong aesthetic sensibility.
Duties will involve the year-round maintenance of the campus grounds through the management of the Grounds department and your own personal hands-on labor. This will include
Safely Operating power equipment such as riding mowers and walk-behind mowers, edger, backpack blower, garden tractor, hedge trimmers, and other power equipment as required.
Raking leaves, weeding, maintaining flowerbeds. Pruning shrubs and small ornamental trees, including climbing ladders while pruning.
A thorough knowledge of horticultural methods and techniques for managing plant health and beauty through pruning, fertilization, mulching, turf management and maintaining healthy soils.
Servicing and installing irrigation.
Landscape construction and planting of flowerbeds, shrubs, and trees.
Maintaining Annual and Perennial Beds through: Purchasing, installing, and managing a seasonal rotation of color plantings in a variety of locations and flower bed styles.
Using hand tools, digging and trenching, fertilizer application, snow removal, and event setup
Ability to perform minor equipment service and repair.
This position will require the ability to lift up-to 100 lbs. and to handle up-to 65 lbs. on a regular basis. Regular bending, stooping, walking, and climbing ladders is expected. Knowledge of safety procedures is essential.
Communication skills to train others in the aesthetics of Grounds Maintenance and the proper use of equipment and safety procedures.
Computer and office skills are essential for communication, record keeping, budget management, purchasing, and preparing reports. Must have the ability to use maintenance management software for work order tracking, and design software for landscape development.
Financial skills for budgeting, record keeping, and purchasing management are essential.

This position may require lifting up to 50 lbs, as well as bending, stooping, kneeling.

Experience & Qualification Requirements
Professional landscaping experience of 3 – 5 years (or equivalent) and professional managerial experience preferred.
The employee needs to have a positive attitude, be able to follow direction, and have an eye for detail.
Good communication skills, along with safe, efficient, and responsible work habits are essential.
The Grounds Manager leads a team of 2-5 people and must be able to delegate and prioritize the work load.
Must have strong computer competence, a thorough knowledge of safety procedures, budget management, and purchasing.
Having a thorough horticultural knowledge including diverse pruning techniques will also be a key to success.
