We are currently seeking a driven and experienced Senior Commissioning Engineer to join our growing team. In this key leadership position, you'll be responsible for managing projects, developing staff, and ensuring top-quality performance across all phases of commissioning. About the Role As Senior Commissioning Engineer, you will lead and direct commissioning services from planning and design through construction, occupancy, and operations. You’ll guide internal teams, collaborate with clients and contractors, and represent the owner’s interests to ensure building systems perform efficiently, sustainably, and as intended. This position requires occasional travel (10–20%) to project sites—primarily in the Southeast and Eastern U.S. Key Responsibilities • Lead and manage commissioning efforts across multiple projects. • Develop commissioning strategies, plans, and testing procedures for Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and building control systems. • Perform and oversee design reviews, submittal reviews, site inspections, and functional performance testing. • Guide and support commissioning team members, assigning tasks and reviewing deliverables. • Prepare commissioning documentation including reports, checklists, deficiency logs, and issue resolution plans. • Interface with owners, architects, engineers, and contractors to resolve field issues and improve performance outcomes. • Represent BD&PS in client meetings, professional organizations, and industry events. Qualifications Minimum Required: • Professional Engineer (PE) license • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline. • 10+ years of total experience in engineering, MEP systems, controls, or construction. • Minimum 3 years of direct experience in building commissioning. • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills. • Willingness to travel regionally for site work and project meetings. Preferred: • CxA Certification (BCA, AABC, NEBB) or equivalent – Preferred but not required. • LEED Accreditation or knowledge of sustainable design requirements. • Experience with energy audits, controls testing, and existing building commissioning. • Familiarity with ASHRAE commissioning processes and energy efficiency standards. • Familiarity with IBC, IMC, IEC, NFPA, NEC, and LEED as related to building commissioning. • Experience in healthcare, higher education, or federal construction environments. The Project Manager / Civil Engineer will work with other engineers and CAD technicians on various civil, solid waste, and environmental related projects in our Birmingham, AL office. The projects are challenging and provide unique design opportunities. You will be responsible for designing solid waste facilities that will enable LaBella to create sustainable, cost-effective solutions tailored to the specific needs of our clients. The projects are intricate and incorporate both civil and environmental engineering skills, including land development (grading and stormwater management); leachate collection, treatment, and management; renewable energy designs; and organic waste management. Brand new, already operational, and closed solid waste facilities face many different types of challenges – there is never a dull moment, nor is there a cookie-cutter solution that fits every similar situation. Duties Projects will include solid-waste related site development projects: develop master plans, design drawings, design of stormwater management and erosion control systems, technical specifications, and cost estimates Prepare various types of related reports and studies to secure permitting for projects Draft work for scoping/conceptual work/engineering packages Assist with oversight and guidance of projects from initial concept through construction Assist in the preparation of project proposals Collaborate, mentor, and lead as appropriate Prepare preliminary engineering reports Perform and review detailed calculations: stormwater management, leachate generation and pipe sizing, slope stability, and compaction density Produce effective and high-quality project documents (including reports, drawings, and specifications) Assist clients with construction procurement Provide bidding and construction administration services Manage project budgets and schedules Requirements Bachelor’s degree in Civil and/or Environmental Engineering 5-8 years experience Registered as a Professional Engineer preferred or E.I.T. on track to become PE Project management experience Minimum 4 years of civil engineering experience, including solid waste, land development, or closely related projects Effective communication skills using oral, graphic, and written forms Ability to relate well to project team, clients, regulators, and contractors Ability to perform assigned tasks with minimal supervision Ability to travel to project sites and work remotely as needed Ability to manage workload and budgets as allocated Knowledge of AutoCAD and Civil3D Team player who is enthusiastic about all aspects of engineering and project management and can lead projects from planning and preliminary engineering through design and construction Solid waste engineering experience Physical Requirements: Stand/Sit for extended periods of time. LaBella is currently seeking an experienced Civil Engineer to join our Civil Engineering Division in the Hoover office, supporting our client portfolio of municipal, utility, industrial, county, state, federal, and private clients in Alabama and across the southeast. This position will work on local projects as well as working collaboratively with personnel in other LaBella offices. Duties: Work collaboratively on planning, design, and/or research on general civil engineering projects. Produce drawings using computer aided drafting systems AutoCAD and Civil 3D. Storm water and wastewater infiltration testing and design. Pavement evaluation and assessment. Development of detailed construction drawings and specifications for steep slopes, site retaining walls, culverts, and pavement sections. Field oversight of subsurface investigations and soil investigation services. Flexible schedule to arrive at project sites at required times, out of town work periodically. Perform technical analysis and provide parameters for design based on subsurface investigation results. Prepare interpretive engineering reports. Perform field inspections during the construction phase, as needed. Evaluate, analyze, interpret, select, and apply standard techniques, procedures, and criteria for civil engineering projects.
