The mission of the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribal Department of Public Safety is to protect life and property, maintain order, investigate crimes, enforce all applicable laws and ordinances, protect natural resources, enforce Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribal Fishing, Hunting, and Forest codes, investigate violations, arrest and issue citations on violators within the boundaries of the Port Gamble S’Klallam Reservation and within the boundaries of the Point No Point Treaty Area. The Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe, originally known as the Nux Sklai Yem or The Strong People, are descendants of the Salish peoples with ancestral ties to the Kitsap Peninsula that date back at least 1,000 years. JOB SUMMARY The Tribal Historic Preservation Officer protects, preserves, and manages the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribes (PGST) cultural resources. This position is responsible for the coordination of and advocacy for, the Tribe’s historic preservation and cultural resources with external governments. This position requires extensive knowledge of PGST culture, community ties, with a strong commitment to cultural preservation, proficient oral and written communication skills, strong organization, clerical, and planning skills. DUTIES INCLUDE: >Coordinating cultural restoration and preservation in compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), Sec. 106 consultation and archival regulations. >Establish and maintain relationships with external goverments pertaining to all aspects of historic preservation and cultural resource management. >Ensuring compliance with consultation requirements with the the Tribe for all governments, including attending meetings, correspondence, and research. >Serving as the liaison for Tribal Council to ensure the cultural resources management plan and goals are implemented. >Be the primary contact for tribal archaeological finds ensuring preservations of known cultural sites, liase with local museums, governments and agencies. >Coordinate Cultural Reviews with Natural Resources Environmental Program Managers. >Map and analyzes known, probable and candidate sites and artifacts, documents and inventories of cultural and historical findings. >Directly participate in field work and research for historic preservation and cultural resource management projects, as necessary. >Engage tribal member participation in ceremonies and repatriation. >Prepare quarterly and annual reports on the status of THPO updates, projects, and research. >Provide public information, education, training and technical assistance in historic preservation. >Ensure that professional and accurate records are kept. >Other duties as assigned.
