Sheriff's Department - Academy - Class 48 Academy Description Below: Regional Training Academy Join the highest paid Sheriff's Office in New Mexico! The Academy is approximately twenty-eight weeks long and is a forty hour work week with weekends and Holidays off.  The Academy is based off the NMLEA 775hr Law Enforcement Certification.  The Sheriff’s Office also adds additional specialized training for a more comprehensive training experience with over 1000 hrs of training in total.  The major area of training include criminal and traffic laws, patrol, criminal investigations, driving, firearms, crisis intervention and defensive tactics. Transitioning Military Members: We recommend beginning the hiring process 4-6 months prior to their separation date. This timeline allows us to streamline their transition and ensure continuity. Even if their separation occurs several months before the start of the academy, we can initiate a pre-hire process. This approach offers several benefits: Early Onboarding: Pre-hiring starts their retirement time with us, activates their benefits, and ensures financial stability. Paid Interim Work: They will earn $23 per hour during this period while working within the Sheriff's Office, providing meaningful employment without the need for a short-term job prior to the academy. WHAT TO EXPECT The selection process consists of a PIQ and PHS, one (1) written exam, a physical agility exam, a background investigation, an oral interview, a polygraph examination, a psychological examination, and a medical examination. Upon satisfactory completion of these requirements, all qualified applicants will be submitted to the Sheriff for final selection. What do I get paid while I am in the Sheriff’s Office Academy? BCSO cadet’s receive a base pay of $23.00hr plus any overtime as earned in the academy. Is the Sheriff’s Office Academy a ”live in” academy? No, the academy has a forty hour work week schedule that allows you to go home at the end of every day.  The shift changes based on training needs from days to swing shifts. Requirements Must be 21 years old by academy graduation. On-call pay ($20/day) CDL training provided. *** $2,500 signing incentive for new employees hired into this position!*** The signing incentive will be paid in three installments during the first year of employment.  This incentive is for new County employees hired into this position; current Arapahoe County employees are not eligible. This position operates our paver during paving season which is typically from April- October every year. Thorough inspection of the paver each day, cleaning of the paver, and proficiently can operate the paver in all situations. This position will also be proficient in a variety of skilled maintenance from shouldering, asphalt patching, and snow removal. Provides regular training to Road Maintenance Technicians 1 and 2. RMT 3 assignments vary and include the grading of county gravel roads, pulling road shoulders, asphalt paver operations and rolling, major patchwork operations, driving/hauling materials, and snowplow duty with assigned responsibilities for the use of specific equipment during the above-mentioned operations. Work is performed in a high performing, team-oriented environment with a commitment to quality results. Operates equipment such as, large frontend loader, milling machine loader attachment, scraper, dozer, excavator, motorgrader, backhoe, semi tractor trailer with lowboy, material screener, material stacker, material crusher, reclaimer, shoulder machine, and paint truck. May also operate equipment such as skid steer, tandem axle dump truck, asphalt patch truck, asphalt patch roller, forklift, plate tamper, asphalt slab saw, hand mower, wood chipper, thermal applicator for durable paint markings, and follow truck for long line roadway painting, highway mower, mini excavator, large asphalt roller, street sweeper, small front end loader, class “A” CDL vehicles, semi tractor trailer, semi tanker trailer, asphalt paver screed, skid steer attachments (mill, broom, stump grinder), soil compactor, paint gun operation for long line roadway painting, and sign making printer, cutter, and computer software. Performs on-site project leadership duties, including:Obtains utility locates for assigned projects. Provides supervisor with information for the daily work input in an accurate and timely manner. Responsible for jobsite organization, quality of completed project, and daily production to meet performance goals.  Provides recommendations for scheduling daily projects and proper use of equipment.  Assigns and directs work of other Road Maintenance Technicians at the direction of the Lead/Supervisor. Plows or removes snow from streets and other public thoroughfares, loads deicing material into trucks, and spreads deicing material onto the roadway with tandem axle truck. Works on an on-call basis for winter storm duty and other emergency conditions. Shiftwork for snowstorms and other emergency events may require 12-hour shifts or longer based on the severity of the storm/event. Trains Road Maintenance Technicians 1 and 2 on the proper use of equipment and job responsibilities. Trains and performs under direct supervision the duties and responsibilities of a Lead Road Maintenance Technician. Occasionally performs these duties as an on-the-job developmental/training opportunity and when operational needs dictate. Performs manual labor duties requiring the use of hand tools such as shovels, picks, rakes, chain saws, axes, hand saws, power drills, post hole diggers, up to a 90-pound jack hammer, cutting weeds, push mowers, weed eaters, side of roadways trash pickup, etc. Performs the duties of a certified flagger within construction zones to control pedestrian and vehicle traffic by flagging and/or properly placing barricades. Assists with traffic control set up and removal at the start and end of each shift. Properly maintains all assigned equipment. Performs daily pre- and post-equipment inspections to ensure that proper fluid levels, air pressure, and the overall safety and cleanliness of equipment is maintained at all times. Conducts CDL inspections on required vehicles according to Federal standards. Performs other duties as assigned. Skills, Abilities and Competencies: Knowledge in the operation and maintenance of all assigned equipment.  Knowledge of road construction methods, materials, and specifications.  Knowledge of safety rules, regulations, and practices.  Grader operators must have the ability to read and interpret grade stakes.  Ability to perform strenuous manual labor as required for extended periods of time.  Ability to follow oral and written instructions and to receive and attend on-the-job training.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communicate effectively with supervisors, other employees, and the general public.  Ability to train and direct the work of other staff in the absence of the supervisor and as operational needs dictate. Three (3) years of experience performing a variety of semi-skilled and skilled general construction or road maintenance duties using various pieces of light equipment is required. Examples of light equipment include but are not limited to highway mower, mini excavator, large asphalt roller, street sweeper, small front end loader, class “A” CDL vehicles, semi tractor trailer, semi tanker trailer, asphalt paver screed, skid steer attachments (mill, broom, stump grinder), soil compactor, paint gun operation for long line roadway painting, or sign making printer, cutter, and computer software.  Experience performing on-site project leadership functions or serving as a team lead or supervisor is preferred.  An equivalent combination of education and experience that satisfy the requirements of the job may be considered.  Necessary Special Requirements:Pre-employment testing includes an acceptable current motor vehicle check, background check, physical capabilities examination, and a drug screen. Possession of a valid Colorado CDL Class “B” driver’s license with tanker endorsement at the time of hire. Possession of a valid Colorado CDL Class “A” driver’s license with tanker endorsement or ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire. Ability to obtain flagger certification within 10 days of appointment. Flagger training is provided. WORK ENVIRONMENT:Position requires exposure to all weather conditions, high noise levels, dust, fumes and other road traffic conditions. Work is performed primarily outdoors often in extreme weather conditions and rough terrain. Work will be required for winter storm duty and other emergency conditions on an on-call basis or during evenings, weekends, on-call, or irregular hours. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The following are some of the physical demands commonly associated with this position.Heavy manual labor in and out of doors is typical with this position including the regular use of a variety of equipment and hand tools as noted above. Spends 20% of the time sitting and 80% of the time either upright or walking. Frequently lifts, carries, pulls or pushes up to 80 lbs. Uses cart dolly, or other equipment to carry in excess of 80 lbs. Occasionally lifts and operates a 90-pound jack hammer. Frequently stoops, kneels, balances, reaches, crawls and crouches while performing work duties in both an outdoor and indoor setting. Verbal and auditory capacity enabling interpersonal communication through automated devices, such as telephones, radios, etc. Constant use of eye, hand and finger coordination enabling the use of machinery, equipment, and tools in a field setting.
