The primary responsibilities of the Lab Assistant are: to be responsible for providing administrative support (such as intake, Quality Assurance, communication, and charge entry), for the pathology lab. Duties and Responsibilities Intake and processing of specimens. Input data into Electronic Medical Records Nextech. Log incoming slides and prepares slides for physician. Log Pathology Reports, accession and pull charts for physician review. File slides and blocks. Compliance to safety regulations. Review all slides and documentation to ensure information is accurate May assist with maintenance of Quality Control and Quality Assurance processes May assist with ordering laboratory supplies and appropriately store supplies. This role will be responsible for drawing blood from patients and answering any questions patients may have to ensure they are comfortable and at ease. The phlebotomist is also responsible for maintaining sanitary work areas to prevent the spread of disease and infection. Essential Functions Prepare patients before drawing blood. Explain blood draw procedures to patients and answering any questions about the process. Verify patient information and labeling blood samples properly. Follow all health and safety protocols and procedures to maintain sanitary work areas. Gather medical testing materials, including needles, sample vials, blood storage bags and test tubes. Accurately update patient information in the organizations database Help nervous or frightened patients remain calm during blood draws. Work with supervising physicians and always follow their directions. Requirements High school diploma or equivalent required. Phlebotomy Certification in good standing required. POSITION PURPOSE Under general supervision of the Administrative Director of Laboratory, the Phlebotomist is responsible for collection, reception and distribution of specimens. Performs various clerical duties including reporting and client supplies distribution, performing limited specimen analysis as trained, under the direction of the Pathologist and Laboratory Director. Must demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to specific patient populations that are served, including the following age groups: neonate, infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric populations. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Every effort has been made to make this job description as complete as possible. Performs phlebotomy, including venipuncture, finger and heel sticks. Primarily interacts with hospital staff, medical staff, patients, and visitors. Requirements QUALIFICATIONS Education: High school diploma or GED required. Some college credits including biology or chemistry and/or successful completion of military basic medical laboratory procedure course preferred.
