Addiction Counselor / Mental Health Professional (Blue Island)
Job Summary Our Addiction Counselors play crucial roles in supporting ignored and invisible populations of homeless and formerly incarcerated who are struggling with substance use disorders and behavioral health issues. This position involves providing therapeutic services, conducting assessments, and developing treatment plans tailored to each client's needs all while smiling and treating them like real people (because they ARE real people). This Addiction Counselor will be a professional who understands that Substance Misuse (a Harm Reduction term) is a coping mechanism for deeper, underlying psychological dysfunction and will work collaboratively with clients to promote long-term, sustainable recovery and facilitate positive behavioral changes through community and capacity-building practices. Duties Conduct comprehensive assessments and diagnostic evaluations to keep us compliant while determining the needs and desires of our patients at the same time. Develop and implement individualized treatment plans based on our patient's goals and objectives while keeping us compliant with the assessment findings. Provide individual and group counseling sessions utilizing Cognitive Behavioral Therapies (CBT), Logotherapy (Life Purpose and Meaning) and other adventurous and fun therapeutic modalities. Engage in case management activities, including coordinating care with other healthcare providers and community resources in a manner that assures they get the help they need on the other end. Collect and maintain accurate data regarding client progress and treatment outcomes (ugh, but necessary). Utilize unbeloved but necessary coding systems such as DSM-5tr for documentation and reporting purposes. Utilize genuine, full-bore compassion, judgment, and eye-contact in listening to our patients as they explain their stories. Facilitate educational workshops and support groups to enhance client understanding of addiction and recovery processes. Skills Must be able to smile infectiously and laugh. Curmudgeons and those of heavy heart need not apply. Strong knowledge of traditional behavioral health principles and practices but must have an open mind (VERY open, please) to edgy evidence-based techniques like Somatic Experiencing, Heartmath and Brainspotting (to name a few examples). Proficiency in both individual and group counseling techniques. Experience with case management processes and documentation standards. Familiarity with diagnostic evaluation methods (DSM) and coding systems (ICD-9). Ability to self-regulate and stay present with questionable populations, including some travel and work at our residential site (which is only a few miles away in Dixmoor). Excellent communication skills for effective interaction with clients, families, and multidisciplinary teams. Strong organizational skills for managing multiple cases and maintaining accurate records.
