That’s just some of what you’ll experience when you join the team at Guide Dogs for the Blind (GDB). We’re looking for an engaging and collaborative team player to join us at our Boring, OR campus as Resident Advisor. In this key role, you’ll be part of the residential programs team (including nurses, kitchen and housekeeping staff, and other resident advisors) assisting Guide Dog and Orientation and Mobility Immersion Program clients in our student residence and downtown training lounge. You will also provide overnight support to clients in the Student Residence 2-3 nights per week throughout the year. Your duties will include: • Assisting clients with general dog care and handling, orientation, and guide-related education • Supporting clients on issues affecting their relationship with their guide, referring complex matters or concerns to appropriate instructor/supervisor staff • Managing critical situations requiring immediate intervention, including acting in response to dog or client medical emergencies after hours • Orienting clients to the residence building and campus grounds and providing theoretical orientation to town routes via tactile or computer maps • Facilitating evening and weekend on-campus educational experiences for clients • Assisting clients with the use of various electronics available in the residence (e.g., computers, alarm clocks, televisions) and in the use of adaptive technologies available (e.g., JAWS, global positioning systems, Aira) Qualifications: • Ability to work with, teach, and engage socially with individuals of various personalities, abilities, and communication styles • Ability to display a balance of flexibility and professionalism in interactions with clients, volunteers and staff. • Solid time management, organizational, and administrative skills • Availability to work overnight shifts, weekends, and some holidays • Ability to safely handle a variety of large breed dogs, with varying strength and manageability. Prior experience caring for and handling dogs is desirable. • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook email, Word, Excel, Salesforce, or other database applications • GDB client, guide dog handler, or direct or indirect experience with blindness is preferred.
